My Benchmade Mini crooked river smells

I discovered the more and more I use it the less vertical play I have. I think i just have to use it for a few days and if nothing changes, return it. Thank you guys for you’re help and I’m still open to any ideas or suggestions you guys have.

Like I said, sometimes it just needs to wear in. Don't listen to YouTube people who don't even use the knives. I see too many of them say if you have any play it's defective and you need to find a good one in person. I've never had to do that, and all of mine have been good to go aside from the odd edge that needed work and some pivot adjustments they're all a-ok.

Does it still have weak detent? I know a lot of people complain about detents that are too strong for their liking, but I am seeing more and more knives with detent that is too weak or even non-existent - NOT from Benchmade, though, as least not the ones I have.

I cant really speak to the smell though it sounds like you already have that taken care of. I have had some slight vertical play in Axis lock mechanisms though it is usually not detectable in normal use i.e opening your blade and cutting something. The only time it is noticeable is when you open it up and start pulling up and down on the blade to check to see if it is there. I totally get that this knife owning thing is not all about function and there is some aesthetic pleasure we get from solidly locked up folders.

My suspicion is that this is coming from a combination of either needing a break in, or in some of the cases that I have found it is because of relatively weak omega springs. Essentially the omega springs are not forcing that lock bar hard enough and far enough into the cutout in the blade tang. To check for this, after locking the knife open press the knife back into the stop pin fairly hard, and at the same time with your other hand push UP on the lock bar (as if it was being pushed upwards into locking position by very strong springs.

If that takes care of the play like it does on my Benchmade Mini Loco, than the issue is probably that the springs arent getting the lock bar up in the cutout with enough authority. Its not a huge issue insofar as safety is concerned. If it does bother you though you could either send it back to Benchmade customer service and see what they can do with it, or make your own springs. I have made a few of my own using .025 inch memory wire that are far stronger than factory springs.

Yes the detent is still weak and I’m positive it’s due to the spring

Thanks and i believe it is due to the omega spring, I’m just wondering if it’s covered by benchmade’s warranty

Any tips on how I could shape them, I’m on my way to hobby lobby to pick some up

It's just the nature of the axis lock. And the springs. Sometimes they are a little weak, probably due to variences in the bends. You should be able to shape some with jewelry pliers or small needle nose pliers and something round with a similar circumference to the stock spring bend.

Is the memory wire supposed to be easily bent?

think I got the wrong one?

if you feel the play is bad enough, send back to benchmade. trying to make your own springs when you don't know how or tinkering is a bad idear.

benchmades warranty is pretty good. they have tolerances and if it's inside the tolerances theyll just send it back unchanged. if you arent sure call them or email them. they are there to help you as a customer.

I have no problem with the play it’s just I wanted to see if I could make some stronger omega springs. But you are right I probably shouldn’t meddle with something I know nothing about.

nothing wrong with learning how to do stuff just realize if ya mess it up its on you. no warranty will cover that.

The memory wire should be fairly easy to work with. There is already a thread on here where someone actually guided me through this process the first time so I was a first timer as well. Some needle nose pliers and something to bend it around, I used a sharpie marker to make some of the S turns. You can use one of the existing ones in the knife as a guide to look at. So long as you get it pretty close it seems to work just fine and ive had replacement Springs in my Benchmade Bugout for months now with no issues.

If you dont want to try your hand at doing it yourself you can buy omega springs online some places. Just be prepared to wait since its around the holidays and you are going to be overpaying a bit for the convenience.

If that all fails, you can try your hand at the warranty at Benchmade. You can send them an email or get on the phone (again, check for holiday hours) and ask to see what they think they can do with it. Good luck

think I got the wrong one?

Not necessarily. My minis springs (both my S30v and custom 20cv) have pretty light springs. They do put stiffer springs in knives with heavier blades, like the full size crooked river. I can definitely tell a difference between the two.

Yea I don’t think imma do it, but if it does decide to break I’ll give Benchmade a call. They suck at answering emails though
