Ok value is always king if it comes with quality. Usually they dont come hand and hand. But I have managed to find a few under 30 dollar knives that I love as much as my 100+ ones. My first is my Mora 2010:

It is amazing! Fish, Camping, you name it...everything short of batoning and chopping this thing does and does well. It is so unbelievably sharp it is scary. I nearly took off the tip of my finger when I was sharpening it....(Wet Stone damn it!). The grip is comfy and the sheath as cheesy as it looks functions extremely well. You just cant go wrong with a Mora!

My second under 30 pick is the Gerber Big Rock. I absolutely love this knife. Anyone who is starting out, cub scouts, etc this is a great knife. The handle is so comfortable it is crazy. I like the sheath as well, not my favorite but certainly up there. The Steel is ok and does a great job. It's super easy to sharpen too! This is a knife I use and dont care if I break it. Not to mention Gerber usually takes it back even if you break it! Still it is a great knife for the money, here a pic from someone else:

Best knife I have that you can reasonably expect to be under $30 is the Kershaw Shallot.

Ontario RAT-1 folder. definitely one of my favorite sub $30 knives. the fit and finish on it is fantastic, better than some of my $100+ knives!

Sweet thread. The last few weeks Ive made a habbit of buyin value folders at $30 or less, most here on the ex. I love how I can gift or lose them without havin to think much about it :D

Just scored a PE tenacious for $20tmd, seller said it was lightly used but couldnt tell, looked new. Shaves, soldid lock-up, cuts well, would bet my life on it. Also scored an KershawOso Sweet, Cold steel large and small voyager for a total of $35 recently, less then $12 a blade! Not typically my style but for the $, I LOVE EM! The oso-sweet is a great cutter and, sweet action (not usually into spring assisted) and feels overall real solid, esp for $12! Lost the large voyager already though, oh well, only $12! But, of all my value blades, I edc my single bladed victorinox sentinel more then anything, $18 for that bad boy NIB, I LOVE VALUE!
(edited-whoops, thats my trekker, not sentinel)

Any of the Mora, Opinel, SAK, etc.

I remember reading an article in Backpacker several years ago where the writer went to Walmart with something like 150 bucks I think it was and outfitted himself for a week long trip in to the woods. He bought camping gear, a pack, fishing gear, clothes, boots, everything. He said some of the stuff was easily as good as the much, much more expensive stuff and some of it was just good enough. I imagine it's this way with knives, too. I suppose if you are climbing in the Himalayas or something, you'd need expedition quality gear. But yeah, most folks would fair just fine with bargain stuff. I know I could!
