My birthday is this Friday!

Glad to see that I'm in the minority regarding scandis. Seems to be a shark free zone!

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to hear why most of you guys don't care for the scandi grind. For me (the reason I prefer it), its the ease of sharpening. Personally, I can get scandi's sharper than any other grind. One 8" DMT duo-sharp bench stone, is all I need. It's flat, only weighs a few ounces, and can be thrown in any backpack, day bag, etc. Hair-popping sharpness for life (or at least until you hit the spine )

Wow, that is a great thread, thanks for reposting that essublime. Nice to read the thoughts of such great makers, especially Ed Fowler.

That will make me look at the convex in a different light, but it still doesn't change the fact that I can personally get a scandi sharper than anything else. A man has to know his own limitations! Ha.

Just my two cents.

Its all good man; IMHO, convex is easy to sharpen. Grab (or make) a strop block, get some 600-1000+ grit sand paper and got to town... albeit slowly and carefully until you get the hang of it. Theres lots of videos out there -- check KSF and Iz Turley on you tube for tutorials... scandi is nice until you chip or roll a few edges; convex gets more steel behind the edge and can be made insanely sharp in the field or in the comfort of your home all the same with a strop and/or some sand paper.

velosa,

I have a scandi Hiking Buddy I use a good bit, it is SUPER sharp and easy to strop! EASY! I am not a big fan of the look of scandi, but is sure serves a purpose! Good Luck!!!!!

I've been known to shark a few scandis, but since it's your birthday I'll stay out this week. (I couldn't do anything anyway, but I won't tell you that) ;)

Will, how could you not like 'em? More for me I guess :D

Man, those are good looking knives!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!! I retract my comment! :)

I know there's at least one scandi this week, I believe it's either a Terrasaur or a KE Bushie, with green/black micarta scales. In case I miss it tomorrow, Happy Birthday Velosa!

Ooooh, though I'm not exactly a huge fan of Scandies myself, of the ones I have had the KE Bushie still sticks as a favorite. This one was gifted to a friend in the UK and I still smile every time I see him post pics of using it.

Just purchased a scandi terassaur a few weeks ago, so I might hold out for a smaller blade. I'll be ready thought, just in case!

If you already have a scandi Terrasaur and want a smaller model next time, I'd suggest a 3/32 scandi Hiking Buddy. If I ever get another scandi, it will definitely be 3/32.

Nice Mist! I have been looking hard at the ED and Bushcraft kardas, but a thin hiking buddy might be what the doctor ordered!

Looks like the scandi is not happening for this Friday. Andy didn't have time to put the grind on it. Velosa, happy birthday. Sounds like you already have this particular sized knife so hopefully it'll still be a great day. No other scandi's this week unfortunately, but lots of other cool stuff....
