My Blade Show thread...

"...I was very dissapointed in a boat-load of makers' work when I actually started handling it at shows. Stuff that looked PERFECT in every way in the magazines is suddenly in your hand and you can see that the tip isn't centered, the plunges are off, there are swirls in the hand-rubbed finish, there are sharp edges OTHER than the cutting edge... etc. etc. You quickly realize how silly it is that words like "perfect" and the like are thrown around on the forums describing knives that just plain suck. A great photographer can make a horrid knife look grand....

I have to agree with Nick. To date, I have not purchased a knife from a maker unless I previously have seen his/her work in person. It is just too darn hard to judge a maker's work from photos on the Internet.

Those look cool Phillip!

Blade Show is just 2 months away!

Yeah, I know. I'm feeling the stress, man. I'm looking forward to the show, but I'm looking forward to it being over with, too. ;)

I just did the "dry run" for my JS flex test.

Here's the knife before flexing:

Here it is after flexing:

I actually flexed it past 90 degrees, just to be sure. It flexed evenly over the whole length, and most of it returned almost to straight. It'll do.

I wasn't totally happy with the sharpness after the cutting tests, but I think it was because of the edge geometry and/or sharpening technique. It still shaved hair afterwards, but not as aggressively as I'd like. I'll play around with that on the other test blade until I get what I'm after.

Very NICE flex. Knife looks nice too. It seems you are doing your homework on this one. When do we get to see some of the others??? Like Nick said, hope to see you at Blade.

Hi Phillip, If you need one like your projected bowie, you can borrow the 10 inch you just sent me. It sure is clean with super great fit and finish. I am sure that it would be super for the JS test.

Thanks for the generous offer, but I think I'll pass. :)

If prepping for Blade is too stressful, I know a blade that's only going to have two judges and requests for a 90 degree bend you could work on. And you're one of its judges. :D

I REALLY like the profile and proportions as well as design of your performance test knife. I use a Ka-Bar 14" bowie that has a very similar geometry and it's the Bomb in my kitchen. Best of luck at Blade!

I can only provide some feed back as--what I like to see, as a collector.

I like to see a knife makers table with many different styles/types of knives. I once went to a show and saw a maker that made a fish knife; w/tale [as the handle], an eye and scales. He also had ax heads, machetes, and all other usual suspects, bowie, hunters, fighters, and camp trail knives. I would not purchase a fish knife, however, I did buy a small solid camp knife, later [several years] a machete, and should have purchased an ax head. His varied collection got me to stop at his table; his passion for his craft keep me their, and my curiosity caused me to purchase a knife.

Just my gut feeling about you obtaining your JS ... no worries, it's a done deal! Just do what you do!

Thanks for your input! Variety is good, and I'm going to try to have at least 5 different styles of knives represented. But if I only have time to make the JS knives, then it'll only be 3 or 4 styles.
