My boy's BSA essentials pouch...

I had my kids try several different whistles from another room to see which one was loudest for them. I also included a thick, tough, large contractors garbage bag in their kit for shelter with instruction on how to use it without suffocating. A real long lasting LED light and a bright colored bandana or cloth comes in handy too. But most importantly above all else they know that their Father in heaven is looking out for them and that they can talk to Him about any fears or problems as well as thanking Him for being in His awsome wilderness and He will bring them home safely.(Thank you Jesus)

Excellent and takes up no room in the kit

siguy;6923396]Rock, I would consider adding a basic lid in the bottom of the water bottle pouch for the cup. I make lids for all my pots out of aluminum flashing. Just cut to shape (a little oversize) and crimp the edges down enough to keep the lid on. Works well, and saves fuss when you want to use the cup.

Looks like a good kit! [/QUOTE]

You know what Simon...I did make one of those! I had some aluminum camping plates...a little thicker than siding material, and I made several lids, I'll have to go did it out; great suggestion and there's enough room in the water pouch for it to rest on the bottom!

attejGreat looking kit

If Id have to think of something to add, Id consider an emergenzy gauze or a bandana... I think most of us have learned some lessons with knives "the hard way" as kids, so just in case of a deeper cut, something to tie a serious wound (and of course some basic training to do so) might be a good addition. IMHO such an emergency might be more likely than getting lost (outside whistle range). Btw, I think for a kid, the whistle is probably the most important item.

Anyway, great job in keeping your kid safe, it looks like he's gonna be a BF/WS member for sure!

He does have a bandana (usualy wears it as a do-rag over his head), but a couple of smaller 2x2 gauze would fit with no problems and he you use the duct tape to secure it...not a bad idea. He know some very basics on first aid, but not enough. When I get back from Afghanistan we're going to take the hunter's safety course and a CPR/First Aid course as well.

Thanks for the input!

Hi all,
Siguy that is a good idea on the lid. Rocks 6 I remember your post you did on making a lid for the canteen cup you did. Breat job.
Also like M if you belive in God and in praying that is a good way to teach your youngsters to do is sit down and pray for comfort and help to be found. Even if they had to spend the night out for what ever reason that put them in a possible emergency.
Prayer can go a long way and like it was said before It does not weigh anything.

I like the the thought of a couple of at least 2x2" gauze pads for a cut or what ever to I carry in my kit several 1" wide bandaids and then several
of the 2x2 and 4x4" ones and then several clear med tape it tears real easy and it it one of the best tapes I have ever used. the other day when I cut my hand I used a 2x2 cut in half and then a little of the clear med tape to keep it in place.

The kit you have made up is a pretty good alrounder for what you have in mind I think. again great job Rocks 6.

Don like you I think the music would be kind of cool to pass the time too. I wish I could play that thing too, LOL but it still sounds like well, Lets just say I think it would scare the bears away LOL

I most definitely agree...I'm a big believer of having a bible in one hand and a gun in the other (or a knife:D)...I thought about a couple of comforting scriptures typed up and laminated and slipped inside...they for that idea!

That's actually not a bad idea with the harmonica...blowing a harmonica, like blowing a whistle is a lot easier on your voice. Even bad sounding music is music to a searcher's ears:thumbup:

My Dad always bought me Hohner Harmonicas and I can't figure out why because I never learned to play them! :D

With the Internet, you don't even have to go out and buy a kid a book on them, they can learn online if you buy them a decent one, get them started early, music makes you think...unless your Keith Richards. :)

Not hi jacking this thread but my Twins would love a Pouch kit like that..Where is the best place to find those little pouches ???
The camera dept. of any "big box" store will have a selection of small pouches with straps and belt loops. Of course, they will not be OD - camo possibly but not OD. They will be less expensive for the features and quality.

BSA Hot Spark is a good deal.

Question for Rock6? where did you find the Titanium cup? I'm looking for something to replace my olicamp that will nest on a Nag bottle. I'm a TX "native son" and we've had that issue with melted food..you can try the dry/crunchy type of granola bars or what we use is lifeboat rations. get them from BQ in Georgia(Mainstay is the manufactor I think),They are kind of like an oatmeal bar but the packaging is super tough and survives being carried around a lot better than snack bars from the grocery store. You dont want ants attacking your butt while sitting under the stars. you might also consider an ultralite hammock for the same reason. Good kit tho. Glad to see that not everybodys kids are inside playing video games! (Can i get n amen?!!)
