I showed him all of the suggestions so far and he really likes the Ontario Air Force Survival knife. Anyone know if this is a full tang?

Don't think that's full tang but I could be wrong. My son has one (that I'm not about to disassemble) and is ok with it but he tells me it's hard for him to sharpen.

The Ontario Pilot's knife isn't full tang. Pretty similar to the Ka-Bar in that respect. And if he's got big mits I wouldn't recommend it. The hexagon pommel dug into my hand. Had to rehandle it. Way more trouble than it was worth. I like my old Camillus MkII. Never used it to baton but for general grunt jobs around camp or yard I like it.

Hi all. I'm in the process of turning my brother into a knife knut (or at least trying to get him to stop buying gas station specials.) I just got him to buy his first quality pocket knife (Kershaw Leek on the exchange for a good price - not what some of you think of quality but it's a HUGE step up :p). Now he needs a stout camp knife. He's been eying my BK2 but doesn't want to spend that much.

So I guess the requirements are:
- tough
- 4+" blade
- Easily maintained (doesn't need to be highly corrosion resistant - I can keep it oiled. But chipping or non-existent edge holding is bad.)
- less than 40 bucks

A couple I've been looking at in his range are the Gerber Big Rock and the Condor Rodan. Another more expensive one is the Buck Nighthawk, but I've seen it on the exchange for less than 40.

Any ideas?

I personally think the leek is awesome. A very classy (but not sheeple friendly) knife.

FYI I have never owned one, but people seem to love the $10 mora knives. From what I hear, for a regular camp knife, they can't be beat for the price.

Ontario USAF Survival Knife, is a decent knife. Little heavy in the pommel and it WILL need to be sharpened. Just enter into the purchase both eyes open...its a good beater with 1095 steel but it isnt an Izula class, blade. For the price ($20) its hard to beat and will take a ton of punishment.

I guess I need to do my research next time :p I got mixed up. I didn't mean the leather stacked Air Force Survival knife (didn't know about it at the time) which is probably about the same as a KaBar, I meant the kraton handled Air Force Survival knife (which Ontario's website lists as being full tang )

Moras look good but for a starter knife I'm guessing they might be a little less forgiving if he uses it hard. Not that it would matter though, for the price of some of these knives he could get a few and if they break, hey, he'll have a brand new one stashed in a drawer somewhere.

Gerber Big Rock - $29 delivered...

- SS
- Full tang
- Lanyard hole / pommel
- 4.5" blade / 9.4" OAL
- Sheath

Either of the fixed Gerbers, 119, or the Izula would be my choice for your price range.

The Ontario AF knife is junk. Not only is it not a full tang its one of the weakest tangs Ive used. I could bend mine by hand.

Save a few bucks and get an ESEE 3 or 4.

Everyone should have or start with a 119. For the price its hard to go wrong, and if your willing you give up yours he might appreicate and like the knife that much more.

I've got one of those and though I hate the sheath, the knife is not half bad, IMO. Seems pretty solid and mine takes a decent edge.

I agree - it's really a great knife for the price. Got mine shaving sharp with a little time on a strop... The sheath leaves a lot to be desired but, at $29 delivered to my front door, I am surprised that any sheath is included at all! :D

Smith and wesson Search and Rescue knife. Plain edge clip point. 25 bu.

Blackjack Grunt 20 bux

Noss beat the heck out of both and they did well. For the Money, hard to say no.

4" 1084 Silver Stag Elk Skinner, 69$ @ Knife outlet

last ones a bit expendive, but you are starting him off as a knife knut, give him something that'll make him want another :)

I would get him an ESEE 4 or 5 and let him beat on It.

You will know a couple things

1: He will have a quality knife to last him a couple years
2: If by some act of God he breaks It (Especially the 5, ESEE will replace It)
3: They both have great sheath's
4: Nobody complains about ESEE because they make GREAT knives.
5: You will be an awesome brother.

"At that price"
Another vote for the Condor Kumunga, or Woodlore.
These are superb blades for the price, and quite frankly compete with the good stuff on the market. I could honestly say I wouldn't feel underbladed with a Condor in the deep woods through a FUBAR situation. Cant quite say the same for the Buck or Gerber!
But then again, to each his own!!!
