My Buddy's Knife

The fixed blade tanto with the 8 inch blade I hope! Go big or go home. :D (That "pivot screw" makes me cringe)

Yea, it's bad! I gave him a small tanto folder. I gave away around 40 knives over the past year or so. Mostly knives I picked up during the beginning of my obsession! Mostly gerbers, sog, tac-force, a kershaw, and many "no names". These guys always asked me why I carry a knife. So I gave them a cheapo that I'll never carry. They always said something along the lines of "geez, I didn't know how handy knives are"? I love sharing the passion.

I've actually thought about doing that with a few of the china folders I got, they're not really bad knives and weren't super cheap over here, but I don't really use them and they leave a bad taste in my mouth. Don't want to resell them either, so I might end up giving them to some colleagues who might want them.

Is that the Walmart chunk that has the built-in flashlight and firestarter and stuff?

Gifting lesser-used knives is a delightful exercise in thoughtfulness. I gave a very nice CE Stretch to my helper last summer after he lost his junky knife. He said, “But what if I lose it?” I replied that now he has a quality tool, and will be motivated to keep track of it. And he has! He’s a classy guy, so I felt it a good investment in him to have a proper cutting tool instead of a lousy prybar.

My brother carries this kind of junk.

I've thought about getting him something better, but if I ask him why he chooses to keep replacing this garbage he says " I don't want to mess up a nice knife ".
Even a $20 Buck bantam or sub $20 Kershaw would be too nice for him to mess up.
The weird thing is that he won't let me tell him his knives are crap.
I think he's just cheap when it comes to knives because he definitely likes knives though will buy junk and likes to believe it's not crap.

You should tell your brother that he will never be rich enough to afford the cheap stuff!

What's so weird about it? Do you let people tell you your preferences are crap?

It's great to try to educate people about better quality knives, but that is way different than being a knife snob and trying to impose your preferences on them.

He sounds happy with his knives and they work for him.

I would be glad he's into knives and enjoying using them.

Sounds like he’s content. There are folks that have an impression about something and it isn’t open for debate. The gurus like us enjoy educating ourselves on build quality, steel performance, brand preferences, etc.
Your brother sounds like the kind of person that has a slight interest in knives, but doesn’t care enough to be educated or debated.

He clearly knows my knives are better than his ( I stay $50 and under too ) but wont accept that his knives are total junk, the fact that screws always fall out doesn't tell him anything .
He thinks sharpness and blade play are the only factors to look for in a acceptable knife, whether or not they stay this way for more than a week.
Maybe he really is content and just likes these crappy knives because they're cheap and look cool to him so he's willing to keep buying them.

He threw it away problem solved! I didn't realize that it had a removable ferro rod built in. He told me it was for survival I laughed. He asked if he should just throw it away. I said yes!

When did fathers stop carrying knives and giving their young sons knives?

I can't remember my father not carrying a knife. My kids can't recall me not having a knife in my pocket. My adult son has been carrying one since he was 12 or 13. My adult daughters have SAKs in their purses.

In just the last few years, I've given away dozens of knives. But unless to a kid, they went to someone who already has a knife or knives.

So what? He doesn't enjoy knives and gets what he needs or wants out of junk knives.

I have a brother who is filthy rich. I mean FILTHY RICH. The reason he is so rich is that he didn't spend on things he didn't think he needed. He has a great house in a great community and travels for his fun. He'll never understand why I collect anything or spend more than necessary on a pocket knife. And that's fine. He lives his life and enjoys it, and I live my life and enjoy it, but we find enjoyment very differently, and we both love and respect the other. Life is good.

Once you enjoy the benefits of a nice, quality knife it is hard to go back. My edc is an overbuilt, well made, rock solid, masterpiece. I hope you guys are there for me if I ever lose it!! I will need therapy! :)

He likes knives, I realize now that he's just never had a good one and doesn't trust himself not loose or mess one up so he makes excuses why his junk knives are fine.
That's where the " don't want to mess up a good knife thing comes from ".
He's completely right though because he doesn't take care of anything.

For the most part IMHO men are not men anymore. I'm 31 but was raised to be self reliant and carry useable things on my person since I was able to prove that I can handle a knife.
Many guys my age and younger are the "why do you need a scary weapon on you" type. It's disgusting! Knives to me and 95%+ of guys here feel that knives are tools first and foremost. My son is 3 and he's been toting around a plastic victorinox since he was 1.5 years old. He has "helped" me make a "spear" out of a fallen branch. Don't freak out my hand was on his and the other hand. He's fascinated with knives. I let him play with my Leatherman juice S2 (under intense supervision) because he has yet to figure out the knife. I spend alot of time trying to figure out what his first knife should be? I'm thinking a leatherman leap. After I know he can handle a knife I can add a blade.
Long story short men in their 40's now wear skinny jeans.
