My Buddy's Knife

What is your edc?
What is your edc?
Well you didn't ask me but I love talking edc..... I manage a retail store and this is my edc and my edc is a well built, rock solid and imo a masterpiece... Cold Steel Recon1 in a spear point with XTS carpenter steel, a LM Juice S2, and a NiteCore EDT2 flashlight.
The CS Recon1 is a beast!

Nice!!!! Cold Steel knives with the Triad lock are rock solid, especially with XHP blade steel.

My edc is a Reate Horizon D CF. It has been my 1 and only edc since I got it. It has ruined the fun of collecting for me. The only other knife I cherish as much is my ARMY issue Gerber multitool I carried during active duty.

He clearly knows my knives are better than his ( I stay $50 and under too ) but wont accept that his knives are total junk, the fact that screws always fall out doesn't tell him anything .
He thinks sharpness and blade play are the only factors to look for in a acceptable knife, whether or not they stay this way for more than a week.
Maybe he really is content and just likes these crappy knives because they're cheap and look cool to him so he's willing to keep buying them.
One friend was over tonite w/ wife to play cards, and he showed me his new $6 folder. Sucky, but he loves it. has a beer opener and a glass-smasher pin. For him, this is an upgrade. He once bought the tv-advertised bucket of 100 knives for $100, and just knew he stole the show. He sees my nice knives, admires them, but figures his knives also cut stuff.
You cannot fight this thinking with logic...but it's okay if he's happy.

But you don't consider yourself a man?

I know many your age and younger who are most decidedly men.
Of course I'm a real man. I work mostly in retail most young males I come across can't even your tie a knot. I bet they can't change a tire.

Nothing wrong with that. I thought my $24.99 Gerber was the cat’s ass for over a year until I started looking at better blades and this stupid forum.:D

All these nay sayers nay saying our toughest and manly ness.

In some aspects your brother is right.A lot of brands have managed to conceal screws backing or falling out on impact by applying Loctite Blue in the manufacturing process. But we all know in the end rough use on any knife over a period of years will eventually need Loctite on the pivot screw and on the pillar bolt construction knives. On that note I recommend you tell him to fine-tune his knives with some Loctite just to maintain it.If anything your brother has the right thought process down on knives...I wish more of us thought like that.

Yeah, in my experience many of these cheapo knives will take an edge and hold it under moderate use it's just that screws always fall out on you.
I've told him that if he puts loctite on the screws they'll stay together, but I'd have to do it for him because he doesn't own any precision torx or have the patience to fiddle with little screws.
Another issue is that they may be really soft, they might already be stripped or just so soft that they strip if you even think about trying to turn them.

He'll just have to get tired of bad knives and decide on his own to get something better than gas station specials.

Around here they of course carry the little key chain knives like the frost Cutlery eagle eye, but they also carry knives like Mtech and tac force.
He gets them from a local store who started with just a booth at the flea market, but the gas station and army surplus across the street has the same knives at a higher price. So yeah he basically does buy gas station knives.
