stanley Leverlock 25 measuring tape - i take my time in making shelters, and having 2 sticks the same length for supporting it really does help.

Small folding saw

SAK huntsman

heavy duty folding knife i have yet to decide on

we will see how my bravo-1 performs, when i finally decide on a handle.

More to come

If I want 2 sticks to be the same length..or 40 sticks for that matter...I just lay them next to each other...using one as a benchmark. I cant think of any reason to carry a tape measure in the woods. Gene

i use it for lots of stuff, especially when i get curious, now i dont think its essential, its really just faster for me, but 2 sticks next to each other would work just as well i guess.

I also saw a guy's walking stick that had measurements cut and painted into it...it was quite nice and about 5 feet in length. That would help when crossing or checking smaller streams for depth.

So, you build your shelters with a saw and a SAK? Because you said you don't have the other two knives yet.

Or is this what your going to use when you finally build a shelter for the first time?

As for the Bravo-1 handle, it's not really going to matter much, they are all good. Plus, it probably won't be your last Barkie.

This thread is funny. Last weekend, while hiking, I used my Leatherman with it's 6" ruler to mark out my walking stick every foot to check water depth.

Great minds think alike I guess.

not a bad combo there...I've got along fine w/oout a tape measure but I carry some things other peopl emight think odd so to each his own... In the interim I'd drop 10 bucks at ragweed forge if you havn't already and get your self a carbon mora clipper...decent for wood working stuff and a good piece of kit to have...Typically I carry a folder in my pocket a multitool or a sak with a saw on my belt... In my bag I keep a large fixed blade a folding saw and a mora..in colder months the larger blade is replaced by an axe...good luck in assembling your kit...finding what you like is a lot of fun....

True, all the BRKT handles are nice. I like the mircata ones myself. However, if you are going to spend $180+ on a knife, you might as well get the option you like and want.....

+1 on Rescue Riley's suggestion

I always have a tape measure but I mainly use it for measuring footprints for tracking purposes. I aso have Hair elastics around my walking stick that I can move to various positions to use as markings for measurement.

As for my kit I ave been using a Spyderco Manix, Leatherman squirt tool and a scrade buzz saw trapper for light hikes. For longer expeditions I throw in a fiscars hatchet and sometimes a Helle Eggen.

One thing missing in my opinion. Pliars. To me, I almost use them as much as I used my knives
A sak with no pliars is not a sak

I just got a SAK with pliars..they come in handy when undoing knots.
