My Car Was Stolen, But They Couldn't Handle the Knife

Yesterday, thieves stole my car, had a joyride, and then crashed it.

I went to the tow yard and got my effects. The crooks left behind quite a lot of stuff: mainly tons and tons of bacon jerky, grape Vitamin water, and marijuana packaging.

The thieves got into my gear bag in the trunk and I found my Benchmade Adamas on the back seat. They stole $5 in change and my cheap baseball hat, but left a $200 knife behind.

And i think it's because they couldn't figure out the Kydex sheath! It's kind of "knacky" even if you're sober, as you have to rock it the right way to get it to disengage. I can see two stoned teens giving up in frustration. Definitely the most difficult Kydex sheath I own, and I found the knife with the sheath still on it.

I wasn't there, but I think they took it out, thought it looked cool, but eventually gave up on the "weird knife" and tossed in the back seat.

Sorry to hear about that, it sucks. Glad you got to keep the knife; there is always a silver lining.

Where I live, they will smash your windows for the dumbest things, so I never keep anything of value in my car. I guess that is why I am concerned about weight because everything gets carried with me.

Some modern thieves prefer custom knives. They are picky.

Maybe they just didn't like orange handled knives.

I can relate 😁 .

But seriously, thieves suck. I believe in medieval punishment for thieves. Start chopping hands off and you'll see a lot less stealing.

I've posted about the knife pictured below several times. In recent years it was my "garage" knife. I thought I lived in an apartment complex where I could leave my garage door open for a few minutes while I stepped inside my apartment without my stuff being stolen. I was wrong. Someone walked in and stole the knife. Fortunately I didn't have any sentimental attachment to it, and it only cost me $8, so no big loss. But it's the principle of the thing.

How I wish I could have walked in on the thief, in my garage, holding a knife in their hand. Scumbag doesn't know how lucky they are.

In this case, my car's make and model were featued in a series of viral TikTok videos where kids learned how easy it is to steal one. I published an article about this late last night because after learning more about what happened, it's a fascinating case, involving three things:

1. an industrial coincidence where a typical USB cable perfectly fits to make an electrical connection in certain car models

2. TikTok, a short-video social media dominated network by teens which has poor content moderation

3. the feedback loop where teens see other teens posting these "Kia Boys" joyride and crash videos, see how easy it is, and want just as many likes. YOLO!

According to press/police reports, tens of thousands of these cars have been stolen across the country in recent months, by kids as young as 11. Illinois police are handing out free steering wheel locks to Hyundai and Kia owners!

You're probably right about the orange handle. If it had a more murdery black handle they would have taken it in a heartbeat.

Add your own secret lock.
Many years ago I was worried about car theft so I spliced some wire into the coil wire, ran the wires inside the car and put a toggle switch under the seat. If you didn't know it was there you couldn't start the car.

I have to say that based on my last 20 years of employment, they didnt stick around after the crash. Most of those crashes are a low speed bailout fleeing on foot and letting the car roll into something. When the crashes are worse, that was caused by driving like an arse and then wrecking. In that case they also immediately flee. That knife was probably left in a hurry. The hat was probably worn as an attenp to conceal their identity.

Link doesn't work.

TikTok = ChiCom sabotage medium.

Thieves will always get what’s coming to them. Unless they’re billionares or politicians… sorry about the situation, but you seem to be handling it admirably. Nice knife!
