My Collection Has Been Attacked By Horn Eating Bugs!!

did you every try to vacuum pack the whole thing for a few days to take away the air from them? (choke, i'm a dead bug.)

Bummer - makes you wish you had access to a gamma ray steriliser I'll bet

I'm not too keen on the freezing thing because of condensation - although if the Brit Museum recommends it then I'm sure it would work

I had a brand new wool suit chewed up one year and now sprinkle napthalene crystals in the bottom of my knife cabinet - (and woollens storage bags and.... you get the idea) - some people object to the smell but I don't mind it and haven't had a problem with bugs since. Chinese camphor wood chests also work and don't have as strong a smell.

Mind you - I either give my clothes a quick wash or a good airing before I wear them after storage - "eau de naptha" gets you some real funny looks on the bus

BTW: If you buy khuks from that auction site, you should be aware of the possibility of getting your Item delivered to you with previous damage from these dermestids, or possibly fully infected.
True; over the last year or so I'd noticed a couple listed there which had evidently been attacked by something (wondered what it might be) as per description.

Did buy a horn-handled WW2 carry from the USA, via that site -- but it was ok.

Could you post pics of what an attacked handle looks like? Maybe some other khuks are infected and users didn't even noticed.

I wonder if a liberal dose of Ballistol (or mineral oil, or lanolin, neats foot oil, or something) applied via a spray nozzle wouldn't give the little bastards a fatal coat of an oxygen-depriving film? If you combined the Ballistol with the abovementioned plastic bags, I'd think that the alcohol vapors would effectively kill nearly anything alive in there to include microbes.

I wouldn't trust freezing. If the bugs are local to you, it stands to reason that they (or their eggs) can withstand a few days of freezing temperatures...or they wouldn't be local to you. I suppose that it wouldn't hurt to try though.

beetles Beatles

think that was the typo that changed the music world. Originally, I think, meant to be like the "Crickets."

(obscure knowledge is a curse.)

Damn, I've seen this a couple of times, but not recently. I'm going to have to do a check of my horn handled stuff. Could have been just something I was passing through in trade, but from what I've read that could have been enough to get a batch of eggs in the mix.
