So I fell in love with the 2011 bladeforums 85 with the cap lifter but with them being nearly impossible to get ahold of, I figured I'd try to make my own! I got this EO 85 with the spear and coping blades for Xmas. With not having much use for the coping blade, I decided to cut into it! I left the front and rear of the blade as is so it's still some what usable. It's just a rough cut right now and I'm sure it will need some adjusting one I get ahold of some caps to lift!(I'm at work now and I think they would frown apon me cracking beers right now!)
Here she is when new....

And here she is now!....

Looks awesome. Clean up the edges a little and it will look like it was made for the knife.

Holy Mackerel!

A for ingenuity. You might need to dull that blade though - especially if you let someone else handle it.

Hope it works!

Well executed. The next time you might consider cutting the cap lifter notch a bit further back on the blade which would allow you to square the tip of the blade into a screw driver. To square the tip of the blade now would make it a bit weak. However, as it is now, it should work out fine.

Nice job! Funny, but I was thinking of sharpening the front edge of the opener/driver on my radio knife, to use as a coping blade.
The proposed new edge shown here in red. It shouldn't affect the driver or the bottle opener.

Well everyone, it failed miserably! After the first attempt I realized the opener wasn't long and deep enough. Back to the dremel it went. It's to the point now that I don't feel safe taking off anymore material and it still doesn't work! Damn! Ruined that one! Will GEC replace the blade for me? At my cost obviously! I'm bummed! Even more reason to crack a beer now!! Hope everyone has a safe fun New Years!!

Sorry to hear it didn't work out. Interesting the amount of ideas surrounding the can opener. On my own Radio Knife I want to grind a few shallow bevels to a) increase the efficacy of the screwdriver and b) allow it to work as a can opener like my favorite implement, the Vic combo tool!

Even if you got the opener right (and GEC didn't get it that right themselves on the 2011 Knife..) surely the blade's stock is too thin to get a top off safely anyway? Snap....

You should ask them about a replacement blade I think. You could ask them about selling you a Radio Knife opener, it might fit in on that frame. Top marks for ingenuity though.

Keep your eyes peeled for an 11 Knife, they're handsome&well finished but the opener does require a certain 'technique' to get a cap off in one. Nice work practicising mind.:D

Under the circumstances, the expletive will remain undeleted.

Bummer, man. I feel for you.

I figured I'd give calling gec a shot on the slim chance that they'd be open and they were! Talked to Chris, which was very nice by the way. She told me it wouldn't be a problem as long as they had the blade in stock. When I send it it, I'm going to ask if it's possible that it could be fitted with a cap lifter instead. I feel a little better now! Wish me and my 85 luck!! It's getting shipped out on Friday!

If that's the case, people are going to be breaking coping blades to send in to GEC. :o

Thanks for the sacrifice. I've thought about doing the same thing. Glad I didn't. ;)

That's what I buy Rough Riders for: to try out my crazy ideas on first.
Don't feel bad, though. Sometimes you just have to give something a try. Happy New Year.

That's too bad the mod didn't work. I liked they way it came out!

So it's off to gec as of this morning. In the letter with all my info included in the box, I asked for it to be replaced with a real bottle opener. Let's see what they say! I'll let you know when I get it back!

It will be interesting to hear, but I doubt it will happen. Could open them up to a whole slew of these things going in for caplifter blade swaps...Pretty great customer service for them to offer to replace that blade though

So she's back home in her former glory! 2 week turn around time was much faster than I thought it would be! They charged me $25 to replace the blade which I think was more than fair and they did such a good job, it doesn't even look like it was taken apart! I couldn't be happier with them! What a great company!!
