My cricket is all horcked up, thanks to Captain Awesome...

Hi Rroossinck,

Sorry for your situation. It is actually quite common. Everyone is an "expert" these days.

If you can't sort it out, we'll try to.

sal

I assume your talking about the Sportsman's Warehouse in Ankeny. I've got a story. I was in there recently and noticed they had a Moran in the case. It was overpriced but I wanted to handle it just to check the ergo's. I pointed to it and asked to see it. The salesman asked "Which one? The Moron?" I had to bite my lip pretty hard on that one. Sportsmans has a habit of putting people with no specific knowledge of anything outdoor related in the "Gift Bar" area where they sell their knives. Gotta' watch your step.

Hey guy, sorry about your cricket. But I will say that I wouldn't trust anyone in Des Moines to do anything with one of my knives. And, yes, I can say that cuz I'm from there. Not living there now but probably moving back in a year or so. Nice to see people on here from places I know.

Fuse, you're right...it was the SW in Ankeny.

I've spent some time on the Sharpmaker, and I might be able to bring this one back around. We'll see.

Sal, I appreciate your offer to try and sort it out. I may just take you up on that.

Oh Sportsmans....The one in Ankney has a BM morpho right now, and last saturday i asked the "expert" to see the morpho. He said which ones that.
I paused, and said "the butterlfly knife..." knowing "balisong" would not get me any farther.
He opened the case and looked for a moment and grabbed a random benchmade folder and handed it to me. I looked confused and he added "...i was never sure why there symbol was a butterfly...makes the blade look ugly."
Sigh.

Nice...glad that they're so dialed in to the products that they sell.

I run into this same attitude/lack of knowledge with fountain pens, another of my addictions (afflictions?). It's very frustrating.

**Update**

Talked to John, who's the camping manager @ the store, and he understood and sympathized with my story. He said that it was against company policy for them to sharpen any customer's knives there at the store, and that he was very sorry about the way it had happened. He said, "We'll get you taken care of one way or another."

He's going to:
1. Talk to the store manager to see what can be done about the situation.
2. Talk with the individual who was responsible for sharpening the knife.

The way he sees it, there are three options:
1. They can send it back to SpyderCo and have them take care of sharpening it.
2. They can have one of their in-house employees who is well-known for his sharpening skills put an edge back on it.
3. They can replace it with something else (this would be the store manager's discretion).

John took my name and my phone number and told me that if I hadn't heard back from him by 3PM tomorrow, that I should call in and ask to speak with him directly, and that he would have a resolution for me.

So, it would appear that I may have made at least a little headway on a resolution.

Truthfully, I'm hopeful that they'll offer to replace the knife. I don't want to lose this one, because I absolutely love the knife, and SpyderCo doesn't make it in this same configuration anymore. But, if they'll replace it, perhaps I can find something comparable. Noob that I am, though, I'm not even sure what IS comparable to a Tufram ATS-55 Cricket.

...while back i gave someone a folder and that was the last time i did that. "hey bro can i throw this like a throwing knife and see if it sticks to the wall". just my 2 cents

Well... at least he asked you before trowing it!

I don't know if there is any other guy from Spain here but let me tell you that people arround here don't EDC at all. And those who do it usually look for trouble, or deal with drugs or whatever. I guess I am the only one in a mile round who has now an Spyderco in his pockets (maybe a policeman... but just maybe). US made stuff is expensive... pretty expensive... Right now I am giving a try to eBay and see if customs don't screw me badly when they see the package from Spydiguys... I will let you know. Just an example: I got a Centofante III for my birthday on August and I payed 100 Euros for it (it was 110 but I managed to get 10 off... no big deal). So having knifes like that raises some eyebrows.

I also own a CRKT M16-14 (I got it like 7 years ago from bestknives along with a Stiff Kiss) and that was my EDC a while back (now I EDC the Centofante just because it is way ligther). I was once in a mountain log cabin using that knife for something when someone asked me about it. He asked me to hold it so I handed him the knife. A few seconds later the knife was flying across the room and hitting the wall. As you can imagine it didn't stick. The first thing I did was checking the knife and see if there was a broken tip (hard floor, not wooden one) or a chipped edge (I seem that AUS8 in the blade chips quite easily... maybe it is just me). The second thing I did was threatening the guy who did it to use my knife on him if he atempted to do another stupid thing with it. I guess I got lucky and none got damaged (there was more people in the room).

Well, an update...

I spoke with the general manager of the store yesterday, and he said that he wanted to replace it. I had some other returns to make at that store anyway, so I dropped by with the Cricket in hand and talked to him. He gave me $60 credit (which might/might not be true replacement value) for a new knife of my choosing. Tried a few, and ended up going with a 420HC Buck Rush. I would rather have had the 154CM Rush, but I'm happy with this little blue one.

I've learned a very important lesson and I don't believe I'll forget it anytime soon. I wish I could have learned it in a less "hard knocks" method, but c'est la vie, I guess.

If you still have it, send it out to Spyderco to get it sharpened. I don't trust the guys at stores to sharpen my blades, even the one who are "known" for their sharpening skills. I've seen some guys do HORRIBLE work on a sharpmaker. Learn to be a master sharpener or send it to the pros only.

I wish I still had it. The manager did tell me that I needed to "trade" the knife out to him so he'd have something to show his management team.

rroossinck, did you get my email? i think you should go get it back from him unless you are really happy with what you have now. i bet he'll probably resharpen it to carry himself.

yeah i don't know any store in the nation where a regional manager can trade a non-inhouse item for store credit no matter what the merit....as i see it you need your knife and one to replace it till your original is fixed...call and see if he is done showing the knife to the rest of the "team", if so tell him you would like it back

Hi Rroossinck,

There should be no reason you can't get the knife back. I think it was great that Sportsman's has tried to make you happy. I'd get it back and send it to Spyderco.

I appreciate the thought and concerns (and the suggestions to go back after that knife), but I think I'm going to leave this one alone for now. Should I find out that it's gone home with him and he's put it on his paper wheels, I'll leave it alone. I know there's a bunch of us who are die-hard SpyderCo fans, but I feel that I was treated fairly, and I really like the Buck Rush. It's a great knife, and I know I'll be able to use it.

Now on the other hand, if Sal happens to get a Tufram Cricket back from Sportsman's Warehouse and they're able to put an edge on it, I'll cross my fingers that he'll remember me and perhaps drop me a line about it. I'd gladly buy another one, should the opportunity cross my path. That's a great little knife!

I have a rush too...the 154 cm plain edge and i think its a great knife, i like the design of their blade and the asap opening is something different, its in my edc rotation
