Most military issue knives are indeed 5-7 inches. However during my service with /force Recon in the USMC most all of use carried larger knives, as do most of the SERE cadre. The large fixed blade is generaly backed up by a small fixed blade or folder.
One of my favorite knives ever carried for this purpose is my Himlayan Imports M-43 Kukri.
However for the most part an 8"-10" blade is great as well as being easier to carry. This size blade allows the chopping and cutting of larger poles for shelter construction, as well as being easy to baton with. My most often carried blades in this range are either of my two bowies by G.L. Drew or my Koster Survivor (I prefer the bowies). I have one on order from Tad Lynch which wont be here till around Sept.
I am a forged blade fan indeed. Most all my blades except 3 are forged construction.
If you run a search on Tad Lynch or Lynch MOB youll find a thread where another member reviews a knife he has just recieved. Should give you some additional ideas.
I would post the thread but have no idea how to do so.
