Finally! My Dad has asked that Ihelp him pick out a new folder. It will be his EDC, though he doesn't even know what that means...;) He has always been the no clip, slip joint type. But, now he has decided to move into this century and update to a one handed pocket clipped super steel mega cutter.
So, basically I am looking for ideas. The criteria he gave me is NO plastic handles, (includes FRN), blade length 4 inches max. Prefer 3 to 3.5". Folder only. No obvious autos. Maybe a concealed DA? Disk, stud, or hole, no preference. He is kind of the "flashy" or "gaudy" type. He spent his youth as a street performer, so anything that stands out as extra cool, wild colored or whatever may be good. Price is MAX $200 include shipping. so, if you got any ideas, or a good knife for him, please post here or email me. This is very exciting.

Spyderco Caly 3
Benchmade 745
Benchmade 943
Benchmade 615
Spyderco Military
Spyderco Manix

I love spyderco's, but I don't think that it's very flashy, the Mili and the Manix are too big for his requirements. Mini and para would fit the bill. You can also look at some of the Kershaw leeks? has some crazy colors.

Check out the Benchmade Skirmish and Mini Skirmish. They come in all kinds of gaudy and flashy colors. :)

You have mentioned no plastic (as following are) but I have to ask: do you exclude G-10 and carbon fiber as well?

I say go with a skirmish/mini skirmish or rukus/Mini rukus. Or manix/mini manix. All have "super steels" and are very up todate in modern materials. If you father likes flashy, he will like the axis. He might also be interested in the wave feature, but you might have to modify one of the BM/spydercos to have it.

I'll second the vote for the Spyderco Kopa. I carry one (Black Micarta) every day, and it's a great little pocket knife. Some of the flashier handle materials are verra nice.

may i suggest Kershaw Offset by Ken Onion. That knife is flashy in a brutal way and it costs around 180$

You are right here!

The new black quince is understated but exciting too:thumbup:

How about a MCUSTA? Something with quincewood scales and it's a bit unusual too, fantastic lock-up and opening:D

Assuming G-10 is fair game by what you'd like to get your dad, I'd have to second the vote for the BM 425 Gravitator. Simultaneously the flashiest most "out there" knife I own, as well as very classy (doesn't get much better than silver G-10, to my eye).

However, I think I may have to recommend a BM 420 Resistor instead. With all the crazy (yet fully functional, once you understand it) styling, and the addition of the Axis lock, I'd say it's about as far as he can get from the traditional folders of his past. Plus, the 420 is a tank of a knife, and feels VERY solid in the hand.

The Kershaw Groove is the most attention getting knife I've used due to the scale pattern and grooves in the blades. That's something to consider. It carries well compared to Spydercos I've had with a similar blade length.

The CF / ZDP Caly 3 would be another I'd look at. Flashy, classy, comfortable and a very well-rounded package.

If AO will work alright for him, consider a Kershaw Leek.

No clip, but a custom BG42 Buck 110 or 112 might work. Could even have STR put a clip and thumbstud on it I believe.

It's not what you're asking for, but maybe along side what you get him buy him a Victorinox Soldier if he hasn't used SAKs often before. Just be interesting to see what he thinks of it.

I see a problem here though. If he's used to a simple slipjoint in the pocket, chances are it had a thin blade that cut really well. Most of the knives you're going to get recommended, including the ones in my post, are going to be ground with horribly obtuse edges. If he's going to get cutting performance like his old slipjoints there's a real good chance either you or him will need to reprofile the edge. Otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if he handles the knife, admires it, but then tries to cut a few things and loses all excitement for it when it feels like using a hatchet in the shape of a pocket knife.
