My 7 year old daughter, Kayla, is with her grandma this week. Somehow or another, they started talking about why people have to work. Grandma tells her "to pay for a house, food, etc" and all the things that you tell a 7 year old when they ask this question.

"Well, Grandpa doesn't work"... My mom tells her, "Grandpa is retired, honey". And she explains retirement. They go on to talk about the things that Kayla could be when she grows up and then Kayla gets quiet for a few minutes.

"I know what I'm going to do!"...."what?"... "I am going to live with my Daddy when I grow up! Because if I live at home with my Daddy, then Mommy and Daddy will feed me and I can keep all my money!".

Hmm, has my 7 year old daughter got the mind of a 20-something year old?
Let's see if how she feels about this when she is 16. he he.

My daughter already knows that I change the locks on her 18th b'day:D

Really, though, I'll let her stay through college if she wants, but she'll definitely be paying rent. Heck, she got a job over Christmas and actually has taken us out to dinner 4 times because she didn't like what I had in mind:D I think that's a great learning tool. Let her see now how much it costs for high life living.

We chose the business avenue in school as opposed to the science avenue and she is taking business and consumer math. Boy has that been an eye opener to her. I highly recommmend it. Much more value than algebra 2 as long as you're not planning on being an engineer or something.............well just my opinion and we all know how opinions are.

Many years ago I was married to a woman with an eight year-old son from a previous marraige. One day he got very mad at her and me and said that he wished we would both just leave.

I asked him what he would do for food. He replied with a scoff, "There is ALWAYS food in the refrigerator!" He thought that he had it figured out.

Good call. Business skills will apply to anything she decides to do in the future. Many small business owners go under because of a lack of basic business skills.
