My dirty shop tour

Boys, I feel you. I lose my chuck key for five minutes almost every single time I use the stupid drill press. It is incredibly frustrating. I am like Jason, I push hard for the couple hours every week I'm able to spend in the shop just working on knives. I really need to clean one night instead of writing on knives so I can work harder the time I am able to be in the shop. Stop to go further type of thing.

Off to reread Don's page.

I made it to about the 20 sec. mark myself before I had to stop it. Any more and I think I would start to cry.;)

That video is like "Scared Straight". It shows me exactly what will happen if I continue down the path I am going. I have to go clean the shop now.

I have mine attached to the bottom of the table of the press with a thin chain. Always know where it is! Kind of like a gas station bathroom key. ; )

I use those small magnetic trays they sell at the auto parts store. Stick one on the side of the drillpress and it will hold your chuck key as well as any other metal acess. that you might need frequently. (like Kant twist clamps for me)

I thought of that too, but I find every chip and grinding dust sticks to the magnets.

Some people like chaining them to the drill press, but I don't want to give that a chance to get wound up and take me with it.

I just have a bit of pipe on the side of the drill press and plunk the key into it.
If I do that it's pretty easy to find.
Plus it's yellow or orange or something I can see well.

I am too embarrassed to show photos of my shop just yet so I am glad you posted these photos. Have you all seen the photos of Nick Wheelers shop since he cleaned it? I don't want to be critical in any way but it looks like he was held hostage by Martha Stewart for a week. I would take a picture too if I could get mine to look like that for twenty minutes.

I stick mine on the side of the head of the drillpress so no chips and if you have that much dust all the way up there well, I'd hate to see the rest of the shop. ;)

Mine isn't that big but I luckily have a 12 year old son who is a bit OCD and he straightens it up or me every few days. It works out good since he is the one that helped me find spots for everything in the first place and always puts stuff back in the origional places. He just can't sit still and has to always be doing something. I'm actually going to have him start filing his own blank here soon.

Mine is chained to the bottom of the drill press table, but my key is one of those that has a spring around the key that pushes the key out of the chuck when I'm done tightening the chuck. That leaves only a small chance of turning the switch on while the key is in the chuck.

Nice shop. My wood shop is to full to add knife grinders and such (I'm using the wood lathe for a make shift hollow grinder along with a 1x30 and a 6x48/12" dia. disc) so I'm trying to cook up alternative ideas. Maybe a welding cart that can be rolled out and then stored away when I'm done?

Yeah, not in good shape right now. I had my remodeling contractor storing stuff in there, which threw off the work flow, etc, etc. I spent three hours one Saturday just before I shot the video re-arranging the floor junk and cleaning up. Too bad you can't see the floor in the video. Haven't got to the work benches yet.

Be careful! It looks perilous in there. Someone is bound to get hurt. I hope everything works out with your remodeling contractor.
