My disc sander.

I'm really tired of trying to make things flat with my belt grinder, especially the end of the handle material that butts up against the guard. I don't have the money right now to buy a real disc sander, so here's what I'm doing.

I got the disc at my local scrap yard. I'm not sure what it was originally made for, but it works great for this. They had a bunch more.
Anyway, it works great. It would be nice if it spun faster, but I can live with it. It gets things flat.

I made an aluminum platen for my lathe also and it works great. Multiple speeds and reversible. Better yet when I am done I put the platen up on the pegboard out of the way. I have also seen people do that on wood lathes. I refere to my lathe as my giant dremel tool considering all the cool stuff you can chuck up and use. I have a huge collection of die grinding stones that let me do all sorts of detailed grinding.

Yeah, lathes are great. I use mine for making contact wheels for my belt grinder too. My lathe is an old South Bend from the WWII era. It has a label on it saying it "conforms to the orders of the war production board".
Pretty cool. Unfortunately, things aren't real tight anymore. I've tried to turn screws on it, with no luck. :(

I'd keep that grit away from me lathe's bedway :)

Get HF's 4x36

I guess that could be a problem. I'll be sure to wipe it down each time. :)
if I buy a disc sander, I'd probably get a disc from Beaumont's.

I got some 3M spray adhesive from Ace hardware. Haven't tried peeling the paper off yet, but I think it'll work ok.

cool
for an old lathe that's worn out anyway it just happens
I just retiered one with a replacement I got to try that

phill
if I could ask
what is the OD of that
and the ID of the shaft bore?
and price?
it looks only about 6" I'm hoping more.
I maybe able to use a couple three of them..:)

Mine is 9" so I can use regular sheets from the hardware store. I have a 6" that has a hook and loop pad that I use for the cermic/zirconia pads. With a lathe you make as many as you want as long as you don't exceed the diameter of your lathes cutting ability.

Rashid11, I put panyhose over the air intake of the lathe and belt grinder motors. Anything that gets past them is going to blow on through and not cause a problem, and hasn't yet.

It is indeed 6". :D Big enough for me, but bigger would be nice.
The shaft bore is .59" Odd size, but these things are pretty soft, so you could easily drill it out to 5/8" or bigger. Also, there's no set screw, so you'd have to drill and tap for one, if you're planning on using these on a shaft.
As for price, I paid $.25 per pound. :D I don't know what would be fair to charge you, but I'd be happy to send you (and anyone else) some. If there's any left. Stuff moves fast at this scrap yard.

I can just barely get two discs off one sheet. There's a few places where it doesn't go all the way to the edge, but that's ok with me.

I have a machine shop, so I could just make them.
by just casting them out of aluminum and turning them out .
but
to save time, money and labor, this sounds good for a few projects

Phill
to bore it out to 5/8" a keyway and a set screw can do also.:)

let me know how much if you would.
if you can get me two I would be greatfull
:)

Shoot. I honestly don't know how much to ask. $100 a piece plus shipping?
Just kidding. :D How about $4 a piece plus shipping? That'll at least pay for the gas to go down there.

I'll let you know what the total is, as soon as I get it figured out. Don't know when I'll get to the scrap yard, so it may be awhile.
Your welcome, have a good day!
