my dobruski is with elvis in customs...

Mauro, you and Mr. Dobruski epitomize the BladeForums spirit and the both of you are to be commended.
sniperboy, I don't know you but I have read many of your posts and I can't think of anyone who is more deserving of such good fortune. I'm so glad that your bali is going to be replaced. This just goes to prove that good things happen to good people.

Don, I spent many years of my life affiliated with the federal end of law enforcement. Perhaps I was naive when I was younger; I merely wanted to help people. So it took many years for me to walk away from the oppression and politics of it all. I found other ways to help people and now I'm indeed satisfied. By saying that, I in no way intend to undermine law enforcement in general. Quite the contrary; I have many good friends within law enforcement. I'm merely implying that the machine itself is sadly out of control and seemingly beyond repair. So be it. There are other groups of people who give tremendous value to life; this forum is such a place, and Don, you are such a person, as is everyone who has shown sniperboy support here. BladeForums is just too cool.

I reflected what JohnR7 said in another occasion on this forum:

He says something like this: "Those who ban pocket knives are those who doesn't have to use the knife as tool, because they always can pay someone else to do it."

I was queuing in the bank and got bored and was tempted to do my finger twirls exercise, I thought: "there is no knife at all around .. seems that no one ever need one".
Then I saw this lady using her disposable razor (the kind that you snap off portion of the blade that got dulled) to open some cardboard .. I realized, it is not that knives are uncommon, but the quality knives lasting a lifetime are!

We should campaign for the ban of disposable razors for the following reason:
  • They are not safe to use, because it might break and slip easily
  • They are not garbage-man safe. How do you dispose the blade safely?
  • They waste resources faster: those blade thrown away = steel thrown away
Then we can again promote old good pocket knives as substitute!!

Just my 2 cents.

Wow! That is gorgeous!
That is my favorite blade. If only the inserts were that red snakewood that Chuck has on a tanto.
What a shame it is to be destroyed.

Mr. Machado, what's this about MA and NY? Balis are legal in both states, last time I checked. Mass has no 'gravity knife' statute, and NY has case law which exempts balis:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
Butterfly or "Balisong" knife, a folding knife with a split handle, did not have blade released by force of gravity or application of centrifugal force, and did not constitute a "gravity knife"... (1987).

I doubt if it will be, some other, lesser knife will be melted down into Federal Paperclips in its' place...

Unfortunately, they only care about what they think the law should be. Sad state of affairs...

The "State" issue with Customs is Smoke & MIrrors anyway, because you are not supposed to be able to import BaliSongs into the U.S.

I never expected for that to be an excuse...

Damned if I know.

Dear E_utopia,

The information I have about balis restriction on MA and NY was learned from magazines and a phone call I made to USA Customs last week when Sniperboy's bali was seized. If you could help with more informatin I will be very glad. Could you call your USA Customs local office and verify this info?
Thanks

I think (could be wrong) that the 5 bouroughs (NYC) has a local law banning bali's and switches and the like. as such, If its going into the port of NY, I bet they'll take it. Also, I live about 2hours from canada so the cops here are a little more lenient because of the smaller population and large population of NRA types it seems.

Please, find out if the 87 statute is out dated. Im starting law school next semester so soon, I'll do my best to keep you guys up to date on all things legal (when I can finally get access to the 2 law libraries Im near (Cornell and Syracuse)

Nate,

Good luck!
Make yourself a damn good lawyer, then climb up to the top stairs and fight for us baliswingers! Now we have one lawyer to be that is also a baliswinger!

That is absolutely one of the most stunning pieces I've ever seen! Mr, Dobruski, I commend you! You work is truly masterful. I seriously hope to acquire one of your pieces this year. And, S, I am completely jealous! After making this post I'm going to have to wipe the drool off the keyboard (it's a good thing it's my girlfriend's keyboard and not mine), but I couldn't be happier that you received a replacement for your bali that was lost. Congrats!

Nate, you're right. In NY state they are legal. In all of NYC, they are illegal. I read it somewhere a while ago. I don't know, something about being dangerous. A likely story, right?

In this very site there is a link to "knife laws", and specially this link "http://home.netcom.com/~brlevine/sta-law.htm It is very useful and we can learn a lot reading it.
There you can find state by state knife laws.
