I hate it when any of my family members (animals included) have to go in for surgery. The dog pictured in my avatar's name is Winston and he tore his ACL playing with my much nimbler dog last week. The vet said that it was probably from his foot staying in place while the rest of his leg pivoted. The surgeon has performed hundreds of these operations, so we are pretty confident that it will go smoothly. He is 115 lbs. so a cast will not be possible we are told, and he will have to be confined to a kennel for 12 weeks except when nature calls. I feel bad for him since he is used to being outside and having the freedom to roam in general. It is going to be interesting getting him outside multiple times a day for months without him accidentally slipping or re-injuring his leg, which the vet says could cause more damage than has been already been done. Wish us and him luck. Thanks

Sorry to hear about that brother. A torn ACL is painful as hell, but he should have a full recovery. My dog got hit by a car a while back and broke her leg. Human or canine, you feel equally as bad when someone or something gets injured. I'm sure Winston will be fine though

Pamper him in the meantime. Get him some filet mignon to speed his recovery ;)

Animals do become part of the family.. I hope it all turns out well for Winston. Got an Idea, when you take the pup outside use a towel for support (Possible?) the vet may have informed you of this already.

Best of luck.

What kind of dog is he? From the photos I thought he was a Heeler, but at 115 lbs!?!? A Shepperd?

Best of luck to your pup and I hope he has an easy and quick recovery :thumbup::thumbup:

Sorry to hear, Good luck !

Our critters are family.

BOTH of my Corgis have torn ACLs, on both back legs.

.... ain't suppose to happen ! No leverage

I have the 6th and 7th 'bi-lateral' (both knee) ACL repairs in Corgi orthopedic history. Our Ortho is a former Orthopedic Professor at the Vetranary Teaching College in FT Collins. Great guy !

Rehab can be a pain as you pointed out, 12-16 weeks crated, with only nature breaks wears on everybody. I found crate muzzles worked better than an E-collar. Got to keep that mouth away from the incision, Caleb managed to un-zipped himself, twice .

2nd day home, had Caleb on a short leash in the yard, squirrel ran by (SQUIRREL ! ;)), I should have dropped the leash, didn't, he pulled, blew the repair and had to go back into the shop. They used a more robust suture on the re-repair, which had to be removed after about 8 months:rolleyes:. Sold a lot of knives to finance those knees.

The 'good knee' often suffers during rehab, Dillon's degraded over about 2 years and had to be repaired. Not even sure how Caleb blew the second one, came home from work one day and , I'd learned the symptoms by then.

I'm glad I went ahead and had their knees repaired, to watch them now you'd never know it happened and Dillon's surgery at 9 gave him a new lease on life.

If you ever feel the need to talk, PM me, I do have some experience rehabbing dog knees ;)

Again, Good Luck !

Poor guy. All my prayers to you...in our family our dogs are like children. When my German shepherd almost died years back, we dropped like eight grand on the emergency procedures to save her. Kudos to you for being willing to shell out cash and time on your dog.

I hope your pup feels better. I had my little dog break her leg in September and it was a very long 8 weeks of trying to keep her calm and still...

However the Vet did a great job and she is running around like a crazy little dog again. You can barely tell that she broke her leg.

Sorry to hear about his injury Stan. I'm sure he will be in good hands with you and as much as it looks like you care about him, I'm sure he will heal up as quick as possible. I hope everything goes well.

Smoke sent - here's to a full and speedy recovery!

Thanks to everyone for all the smoke and warm wishes. We got him back today and are going to have to really watch him. The surgeon said that dogs this big have around a 50% chance of tearing the other ACL from wearing out their good leg from bearing all the weight. He is pretty tough though, so I think he will make a quick recovery. Once again, thank you everyone and here is a current pic of the big galoot hating life but enjoying the meds.
