Hey Guys, I went to my cabin yesterday wich is 15km of hiking through deep wood so I had to opened up the trail like each spring. This year there was a lot of broken trees due to the numerous winter storms we had so I had some chopping to do. After only 2 or 3 trees I felt something passing by my head wich wasn't a chip of wood so I look at my DogFather and to my suprise there was a big chunk of metal missing... and the rest of the blade was full of dent. I couldn't believe it, I'm so strong that I've destroyed the ultimate chopper... Then I realized that this one was for sure a defect. ScrapYard will probably fix it but how long is it gonna take with everything going up with them lately, good thing I have 2 others...:) Funny thing is that my $20.00 BlackJack Grunt made in China outperformed The Dog for one day...:) Anyway take a look at the pic and tell me what you think, also anyone had something similar??? Cheers Treg!!!

Really looks like impurities in there or wonky heat treat.

I am pretty sure they'll a) replace and b) study that one. That sure is a weird break!

Good luck.

That would kinda tick me off.Good thing you had the backup.Looks like a heat treat issue?

Sh*t Happens.

My guess would also be HT, because it's clearly not only the coating that chipped.

It's not a heat treating issue but rather with the milling process. Scrapyard is fully aware of it and has taken steps to correct it.

Send it back Dan will send you a nice new one. Of coarse you will have to break it in again...;)

Oh and it's not even close to being dead it will still out perform just about every knife out there.

Everything and anything can break. One time I had a large half moon piece the size of a golf ball break away from my CS Ghurka Kukri. And I had a Junglee bolo style machete break in two when I was just chopping some 1" diameter saplings. Both companies replaced the items with new knives, but my confidence in the product was not the same.

Look like it was made from a CPM steel.
I know it's not CPM, just looks like it. :)
I would guess they will fix it.

Sag.

It is a flaw. A small air pocket or pockets inside the steel is/are the culprit... Seems a few of these DogFathers got out before being discovered as having any type of flaw. Jerry & Dan Busse were made aware of this back in December. It should be covered without question and I recommend that you email Patti@scrapyardknives.com to see about your replacement. They will probably want yours back to examine it to avoid a repeat of this in the future on other SYKW blades.

See this thread about the only other I know about...

The very same thing happened to tomthebaker

Jerry's response:

Jerry Busse said:
It appears that Scrap Yard might have had one bad plate of steel with air pockets that were nearly dead center in the steel. . . No one's fault except for the steel mill who let it pass. . .

Just spoke with Dan and this is covered by the bullet proof Scrap Yard warranty, even though it is second hand and modified!...

Jerry :D

I'm very glad that you were not injured by the piece that flew off!! ...I recommend that you DO NOT use this DogFather anymore. No point pushing the possibility of getting a piece of shrapnel in ya! :)

Looks like a void or inclusion could be part of that failure. They'll replace it. None of my CPM knives has ever done that, but I don't hit them with hammers, either.

Thank's Jaxx for your concern, I always wear protective eyewear went I'm out in the woods. You never know went a branch is going to poke you in the eye or a piece of shrapnel is going to fly by.

Yikes! This just goes to show that even the most trustworthy knives can have fatal kinks!

I'm glad this will work out for you.

If Noss would have had this knife, it would be pretty entertaining to hear the comments. No telling the conclusions that would be jumped to!

Ouch! Just goes to show that no matter how good a manufacturing process you have, how good your materials are, and how good your QC is... defects can still get out.

All it is is an air pocket.
Funny thing is that if it was an inch back from the edge you would have never known.
They have now fixed this problem in their manufacturing process, anyways its not their fault its the steel manufactures.

Why not use an axe for chopping trees? That's what they are made for, so I've heard.

If you ever open a trail full of falling trees, 2 to 4 inch in diameter hanging overhead you will realize that an axe is useless and dangerous...thank's for the comment anyway...
