Well i know this is not relay knife related but i had to share this with all my friends here in shop talk. so of of my dreams are coming true and i hope with hard work it will be done by summer time so i can take her out for some fun. I have been wanting to build a rifle for awhile and one caliber has been at the top of the list ever since my passion for guns started. i will show you the pictures and see if you can guess the caliber. Just to let you know every thing is hand made in the shop where i work except the barrel which was bought from K&P. so far the bolt is almost done, it just needs its innards made. the receiver is about 70 percent done but needs more milling done to it. but its internal lugs are cut but not split to except the 6 lug pattern on the bolt yet. the barrel is just a blank that starts at 1.7" and tapers down to 1.5". i will taper it a bit more and maybe flute it. the next thing is a muzzle break that will thread onto the end of the barrel. everything is just roughed out and heat treated but it is going to be a blast when its done. still lots of work left but thats half the fun part. o and the last picture is the round it shoots just incase you could not guess by the size of the rifle ;) What you think.

Wow, that is going to be cool JT, can't wait to see the finished product!

wow, JT. You really believe in making everything! :)

What is the legality of making those? What was the muzzle break in the second last picture originally from?

A belt fed .50 repeater sweet!(lol) Thats one hell of a muzzle break! What kind of optic's do you have in mind? Any slope milled into the rail?

It is 100 percent legal as long as i don't live in California , the muzzle break is a brand new cast blank that one of my bosses gave to me. he designed it for 50 cals and had a bunch cast a long while ago before this style was seen on other 50 cal rifles. the idea kinda got snatched from him. long story but in the end he got no credit for his design. but he has 2 left and he gave me one. its just a blank and needs to be drilled and taped and ground and polished. man I'm excited. i will have to wait for a scope as they are kinda price for a good one that can handle the recoil for this bad boy.

Wow they always mention about Barret's awesome muzzle breaks on tv shows, surprising that it was his design.

yes i will mill a slope on to the optic rail so i can zero it in at a longer distance. my boss has one that he made of the same style that can do a 5-6 inch group at 1000 yards. i got the barrel and receiver blank from him. as for the optic's i really don't know yet.

the company that he had do the casting for him kept a few and sold them to a rifle company. they even said so when he confronted them about it. but once an idea is loose you cant get it back even if you can prove you where the first one to make it. so i guess so to speak i have one of the very first ones of this style of muzzle breaks :D an original.

I'm guessing the brakes were sold to Armalite? Just guessing from the looks of that one. It is a VERY effective design.

Keep us posted on this. I have an AR50 and you need to get good optics like you said. If you don't you will never realize the full potential of that chambering.

If you haven't already found it you might take a look over at biggerhammer.net. Every now and then some good deals could be found on optics and parts. It's been awhile since I have visited that site though.

Good luck on this one.

thy are the people he mentioned that got the cast prototype but i did not want to speak ill of other company's, all is far in love and war i guess. he has called them and talked to them about it but nothing happened from it.

That's not cool on the part of Armalite, but that's pretty low on the part of the casting company to sell off someone elses design. I won't turn this into a bashing thread though.

Keep us posted up on this project. I'm always intrigued by your work. I'm excited to see how you finish this one.

Jarod, that is AWESOME.

Hey, after you are tired of the .50, why not build a 20MM? All ya gotta do is register it NFA as a DD. :D

ammo cost for the 50 is pushing my budget, i cant imagine the cost of a 20mm round. it's like the 700 nitro, there something like 400 bucks for a box of five bullets. man now that's not a plinking gun, thats a save your life from a charging rhino. but the 50 bmg still has it beat with Foot pound of energy. now if your talking about the old school "2 bore" here is a clip from wikipeda about it.
The gauge was 1.32 inches or 33.6 mm, and the projectiles generally weighed about 8 ounces (225 grams / 3500 grains). The velocity was low, at its best around 1500 feet per second at the muzzle, but hit with approximately 17500 ft-lbs of energy.

I do not have all the details, but you can get surplus vulcan ammo, brass and bullets. They actually make dies for it to reload. I think it works out to be $10 a shot if reloaded. You can get the surplus 20mm powder at Pat's reloading. I think it does use BMG primers. I went through a phase where I seriously wanted something I could kill deer through cinderblock walls at 1000yd for a while. I was gonna get the 20mm. I saw it as if I am gonna spend 6 or 8 grand on a rifle that serves no purpose in the sporting world, then I am gonna go all the way.

The BMG guys at accuratereloading say that brake is the best one out of em all, and the only thing that made shooting difficult was the muzzle blast. Speaking about the AR50 that is.

this thing is going to be tough as a tank to allow hot loading the sucker. i was thinking of doing a light of had carry gun but then i was like na we want mad power. plus the weight combined with that style of break will give very good recoil reduction.
