So...here is my process.

1. Put the silicone stone, of my father, in a bench vise at 10-15 degrees (measured as good as I can)

2. Reprofile with a old silicone stone holding the knife horisontal.

3. Dont stop until burr forms

4. Continue process on of 2 and 3 on stones I have with lansky kit from 220 grit up to 1000 grit.

5. Use buffing wheels with green compound

6. Light leather strop with green compound.

Results:

154CM

To maintain if edge is damaged.

1. Use lansky turn box kit (or sharpmaker) at 20 degree angle to create a micro bevel

2. buff

3. leather strop.

In the field:

1. 600 Grit diamond paddle

2. Strop on 1200 grit sandpaper

3. Leather strop.

So far this has worked great for me. Your thoughts and comments on my method or improvement strategies are welcome.

Seems like your method turns out brilliant results, I like the different steel comparison, very cool.

I think many of us have preferred methods, but it is highly disputable regarding superiority of one method over another...and in my opinion it generally comes down to personal preferences.

Your methods seem to produce nice looking results, the performance is harder to assess from photos, but I presume that they perform well for you also.

It would be pretty hard to recommend any methods or improvement strategies without knowing where the edges are lacking. Is there anything you would like your edges to do better?

Very good post and agree about preferred methods.

At the moment I cant think about anything I would like my edges to do better.

I have given this some thought and I think the only thing that might make the entire process easier is to get some diamond stones from XC up to XXF. At the moment the process is very time consuming.

Perhaps the diamonds would speed the process...They are my preferred method (for many blades).

I believe the key is to find something that you enjoy...that produces results you also enjoy...and stagnate with it long enough to maximize your abilities with it before trying something else.

How fast do you need to sharpen a knife? Powered equipment will be faster still, having someone else do it for you is even less of your time...but perhaps you understand my point...sometimes it is about the process and the enjoyment it brings.

If you want my opinions, DMTs are great. But I do not seem to spend any less time jacking around at the honing bench since buying the run you speak of...I simply find more ways to tweak the knives (reprofiling, thinning, polishing, etc.) If you are anything like me, you are not really looking to reduce the time you spend on your hobby...but broadening your assortment of tools is not always a bad thing if you want to continue learning things;)
