This is my entry for American Bushman's Fire Steel Contest. My thinking on this project was to have ways to aid bad weather fire starting, attached to the fire steel (fatwood and jute), so you wouldn't have to worry about leaving them at home or searching you bag. It is a piece of fatwood with a 1/4" Going Gear fire steel. Marshall also sent me a piece of hack saw blade for this project. The fire steel is friction fit (very tight) into the fatwood, so you can replace the fatwood in the future without having to worry about the epoxy. The hack saw blade is attached to the fatwood with 2 1/2" feet of jute tied into a lanyard and than a small loop for the blade.

I love pitdog's pictures, and my dog Buddy kinda looks like Maisy. I know pitdog's fire steel still has a lot of life left in it :D, but if he is interested, I will mail this out to you for free (PM me your address). Again, love your pics.

DUDE - this is so funny - I was JUST thinking the way to do a handle for a firesteel is to make it FROM Fatwood.

How does it work?

TF

Now if you could just drill a hole at the end of the fatwood to store PJCB's and add a button compass it would be PERFECT :D

Great idea  if Pit doesn't take you up on your generous offer ... I will

That is pretty cool, the jute/fatwood combo is a nice touch.

The fire steel blanks from Going Gear are great. I was throw sparks to the ground while standing. I figured in wet conditions, you just untie the jute (enough for few fires) and shave some fatwood. Fatwood does gum up your drill bits and saw blades though. Fun project.

Man I'm always amazed at the generosity shown by people on this forum, today, not only have you offered to take pity on me but Stomper of JK knives has also said he would include a ferro-rod with my knife order so I'd better decline your offer and maybe let someone more deserving take you up on it!!!

I actually feel a cheapskate for ever mentioning my pitiful ferro-rod !!!!!!:o

Thanks for the great offer buddy, great idea with the fatwood as well !;)

I already have 2 of Stomper's knives on order, and your new design might me add another. You should put your old fire steel on Maisy's collar for a cool reminder and a backup (it should have 400-500 more fires in her).:D The offer now goes to KuRUpTD.

PM me your info.

Damn it - now I am 30 dollars out because of Storl and his blankity fire steel blanks! ;)

TF

I used the 1/4" x 3" and they run between $2-3 each, if I remember. Your right though, with his site you walk out with 5 fire steels, a hank of paracord, and some capsules for $30 because of the shipping costs.:D Whatever you do, don't go to County Comm, because you'll spend $100 to justify shipping.:D

Here is pitdog`s new knife, designed by him, and matching firesteel.

The design on paper I liked, but seeing it as an actual knife, makes me want one even more. Pit has a winner there. At least in my book

Just mailed it out today. I went camping this weekend, and I wanted to try it out before sending it to you. I brought 2' of jute and an extra piece of fatwood, so I could test it without destroying it. It worked great. I folded over the jute a few times and cut it into 1-2" pieces. I then frayed the jute to create a giant fuzz ball. I made 30-40 fatwood shavings and put them on top of the ball, and then put the remaining fatwood pice on top of that. Worked like a charm.

Hope you enjoy it.

Can I suggest making a "blade cover" for the fire steel instead of a handle of fatwood. this would give you more material to start fired with and could be replaced as it wore away without having to make a new handle.

Just a thought

Ssshhh, that is going to be my other entry into the contest.:D I just received some 3/16" fire steels that I'm dropping into a 1/4" hole. I'm going to wrap the fatwood with jute, and secure the steel with a mini carabiner.
