After reading this review by MistWalker (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/941807-A-Small-Knife-I-ve-Been-Playing-With) I decided that I wanted to buy the Tops Delta Unit 3.
When it arrived, however, I had two complaints:
First, I was disappointed in the color of the micarta scales. The blue seemed far less vibrant and, well, contrast-y in person than it looked in photos both on the Tops website and in Misty's review.
Secondly, the red liners in the handle were poorly cut, as if the die that stamped them out of their sheet (I assume that's how it works
) was in need of sharpening or calibration. This resulted in a ridge where the liner meets the scale that changed the feel of the knife in the hand. It also compromised the red color of the liner by turning it the cloudy white that plasticky materials take on when they're stretched.
I called Tops, feeling a bit sheepish that my complaints may have been too petty to actually merit significant action, but I was pleasantly surprised when my call was answered by a human being, who quickly transferred me to the appropriate human being for my grievances. He listened intently, apologized sincerely, and acted immediately.
He arranged for shipping of my knife back to the factory for the liners to be reworked or replaced, then informed me that a little oil on the scales will draw the color out nicely.
My knife (or a new replacement - I'm not really sure) was returned to me with surprising haste and perfect liners. I sprayed the handle down a few times with 3-in-1 oil (because it has a pleasantly nostalgic aroma second only to Hoppes No. 9) and now it looks great.
Thank you to Tops for standing behind your product and giving 110%!
