My FABM gets a facelift

Man it's hard to decide which mod I like the best. What a creative gift you have Ban!

I just tried some chopping with it this afternoon and it performed as expected. I was able to go through the 2X4 in 8 and 10 chops respectively. Note that these were pure clean cuts on the 2X4. They were not the typical wood shattering and splintering type cuts typically seen with the heavy weights.

Some things I have noticed:

1) My technique can use some definite work. The job would have been much quicker if both sides of my cuts met up and converged at the same spot. I tend to end up with a zig zag dealy and not a clean V notch. Hence additional cuts were required.

2) A thicker and heavier blade would have helped to wedge and split the 2X4 along the grain. I made several really deep and clean diagonal cuts that were deeper than the height of my blade. Unfortunately, they were so clean that not much damage was done to the surrounding wood. More mass would have powered through and shatter and weaken much of the surrounding wood during the cut while a thicker blade would have helped split the wood along the grain past its max elasticity.

Nevertheless, I am very satisfied with my thin and lightweight FABM.

looking good. I kinda feel a bit sad that the top scallops are gone, kinda looses it's Fusion'ie look. Maybe I just need to get used to it. because I like that look with the straight handles.

I am sure you meant to say the FBM look;). The Fusion series are based on the Fusion Handles.

My opinion is neutral towards the scallops. In general...I tend to prefer the more simple looking straight spine.

I'm fairly certain that's the BEST Battle Mistress I've ever seen outside of the job you did on Dennis's smooth handled 1/300!!!!!!!!

I'm kinda partial to Ban's WFBM!

Looks great Ban!

The old school green linen slabs are a huge improvement

I don't blame you. My knife is pretty plain jane compared to that WFBM and the Ironwood FBM.
Yours? Plane Jane? Not a chance! Great grinding and a classic old school Green Linen handle! It's fluggin' beautiful man!

Hey....uh am I missing something? Did they discontinue green linen?

No they did not. Busse is still currently offering Green Linen. It is just that the older green linen has a very unique look to it. I just recently found out that the handles currently on my knife is the old school green linen. I always assumed that it was black or brown linen or something like that. It is darker with much more contrast than the current green linen. As some have mentioned...it almost has a snake skin look to it.

Thanks for the clarification Ban, those ARE particularly beautiful scales if I do say so :D....they look very different than the one's I had before.

OK, now you're all making me REGRET that I gave up those scales to Ban. :grumpy:

but the new green linen ones he gave me don't look too bad

NO REGRETS :D She is in good hands and won't be going anywhere! I'll make it up to you one of these days :D

Did you ever get a chance to try out that FSH yet?

Ban could we get some views of the handle to show the tapering of the tang? I'm curious to see how much you have taken off and if or how you then filled the space resulting from the grinding.

no need, no regrets.

Sorry, the beating has not yet commenced. I'm thinking of doing a chopping comparison, like Phil did, but space it out, like one or two knives a day, so that fatigue does not enter as a variable. But I think I'll need a good clamp system.

I certainly rested between blades and wore a work glove as well to minimize the fatigue factor, but I felt it mostly the next day . Also clamped the wood down with about 5-6 clamps. And tightened them down around every 10 chops...

DO it man!! More chopping!!!!!!
