Me and my father (retired machine shop owner and 40 years of machine shop experience) and I are going to make a Hawk. One solid piece, 1/4in thick.Overall length 12-14in 6in or so wide blade.Perhaps a bit of "Norse" design to it.
Chord wrapped or paper handle. Something close to Rangers RD Hawk.
I know we can buy one for less than the price of materal, and the time and effort, but we have the means, and it would be nice to have something that me and my father made between ourselves.

We are still up in the air about materal. Deciding between 5160 Spring, 440 stainless, and 4140 pre hardened (30 rockwell) which would be very tough.
4140 is easier to come by as most spring steel is, well, still in spring form. We can order spring steel, but 1/8 is about as thick as we can get it. We are thinking, go with 4140, cut it out, and flame harden the edge.
440 would be more expensive, but once we heat treat it, it wont rust.
Dad feels that 4140 would be the most "logical" choice.
Thoughts?

ehh. i just wouldn't trust 440 stainless for this project and spring steel is difficult to work with and not too practical go with 4140. although i dont kn ow anything about that steel.
