My Father Has Been Busy

Most of you know that my father, Pala, is visiting me. He likes to keep busy and often looks for something to do. A few days ago he wandered into my storage shed and found my box of Kardas that I had stored there because the handles were not up to our standards.

He decided to make replacement handles from some of the the wood you forumites had donated to HI and the Kamis who needed it. His first hurdle was making the tools he needed from the knives I had in the storage shed. He was not used to American tools and set about making his own from what we had on hand. He took a returned chiruwa Ang Khola Khukuri, sharpened it, and made and several other tools he needed.

He ground a new edge on the CAK Khukuri using the first tool he created
and started making new handles for the Karda knives he found in the
box. Using limited tools he created true one-of-a-kind, handmade treasures
from his personal artistry.

The amazing thing is that he could make new handles with such precision
while he is waiting for double cataract surgery in July. Who knows what
he can accomplish when he can see much better than he does now.

These mini Kardas are very sharp good kitchen knives and will slice fruit and
vegetables with ease. He made 13 Kardas with new handles. I am keeping one for my collection.

Here's what I have:

Six (6) knives with a finger groove and a light grain wooden handle, possibly teak.

Two (2) more have square handles made out of a white wood, maybe maple.

Four (4) have a curve on the bottom and walnut handles. My father put a hole in the
bottom of these handles and installed a leather strip, making them perfect for hanging
on a wall.

Having my father here has been a big help to me in both a business sense and a spiritual way. He gives me valuable advice and is comforting to have him with me in my house.

I got so excited emailing that I forgot to post:o

Guys, this is your chance to have a hand turned knife by the man himself! I'm hoping to snag one of these just for that reason alone. These are VERY special knives, and a great keepsake for the friends and family of HI:thumbup::D

well, and oh well and crap

are there any w/o finger grooves left?

7 or 8? guess I will email

I don't know if any of this is the wood that Dad and I sent, but I've mailed him, just in case. ;)

Thanks!

well, 7&8 are mine :)

Thank you Pala for the chance to have these...
Like Steely, I was pretty hyped at just getting one you made like this...

That's the neat thing about kardas, with some work and patience you can get them incredibly sharp. Sometimes the handles feel just a little too small in relation to such a thick blade.

I think some of these Pala Specials would excel as an EDC work knife for guys like me who need a good sharp blade but not a large blade. actually, in years past I have carried a large karda in a slip sheath as a box opener.

Since I have snagged number 12, I am envisioning a back pocket sheath that rides right next to my wallet. Quick access, out of the way, and easy to make:thumbup: I carry my Buck 110/112 this way, but I prefer a fixed blade over a folder when I can.

As do I, you're lucky you don't have to go into the nanny municipality of Seattle on a regular basis.

No fixed blades period, including butter knives, chefs exempt from everything though (corrupt politicians need their food).

One of the fringe benefits of a family business is making the rules about office attire and restricted items (or lack there of;)). Hey, if I'm going to work 10 hours a day 7 days a week, I'm gonna be comfortable and happily packing my HI knife and a pistol:p

Indiana has some very easy knife laws... no automatic knives or gravity knives, balisongs are OK and beyond these rules, if you want to carry it, carry it. Swords, knives, whatever, sword canes, concealed or open carry, it is all good. Of course, this doesn't mean you won't get hassled, just that it is legal.

Oklahoma has vague knife laws, but the clause that is a bit unfair is "any other type of offensive weapon" in addition to a long list of things illegal. Basically rules out everything. Rather sad for such a rural state.

That is just it, IN lists a couple things that are illegal and that is it, the rest simply are not regulated at all.
