Hey all, my names James, I'm a senior, set to get Eagle Scout and planning on going on to the USAF. Here's my 4 favorite knives (that I've owned) and why I like them. (linked to product pages for full specs)

First: Benchmade Griptilian

This knife is my favorite folding knife ever because of its size, blade and flickey abilities. It's a great everything knife. It has great steel (154cm stainless steel), keeps it edge great and doesn't loose any blade paint. I own one right now with a dark theme, dark handle, dark blade coating. The lock is great and allows for easy flicking open and closed (note that it isn't automatic or spring assisted). I use this from odd jobs and paper cutouts to bayoneting wood (done this a number of times on campouts + backpacking treks). The one thing I don't like is the small seam on the edge of the handle, it just visually annoys me. Best knife ever, will always be my go to brand.

Second: Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto

This knife is my longest owned knife, and definitely the most heavy duty. It uses a CPS steel with a diamond/carbon coating for extra hardness and a great painted blade that doesn't scratch. The knife is thick, long, uses a G-10 handle, has an amazing belt clip, has a nice thumb stud and can even be flicked with practice. This thing is the most durable knife I've ever owned, better then my kabar, but a bit heavy so I can't use it when backpacking.

Third: Spyderco Dragonfly

A small, lightweight knife that is still crazy capable. I bought this for a 2 week backpacking trek in New Mexico. It was a great knife that kept its edge and more importantly for backpacking was small and lightweight. The handle made from FRN was grippey, and the thumb choil made it 2X more capable. However, I didn't like the spyderhole (just erked me) and sold the knife after my trip.

Fourth: KA-BAR Marine Fighting Knife

The classic knife, that preformed to its reputation. I got this knife due to people telling me how great it was, but once I got it, realized that I have no use for it. I cant use it during summer jobs because its a huge fighting fixed blade knife, and really have no application for it elsewise, but it looks crazy awesome, and makes you feel badass when holding it. I keep it next to my bed to ward off the monsters.

Please comment what your favorite knife is, and any questions, comments or concerns.

Congratulations on your progress in Scouting!

I think you'll find the USAF to be a great deal like the Boy Scouts...

...only without the adult leadership.

(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)
