So I've been rediscovering the joy of knives this past year. When I was younger, I had a knife if I had my pants on. But somewhere along the way.... well, I don't know what happened. Fast forward 10-15 years and I'm in a safe, stable place for the first time since high school. For reasons I don't fully understand, some of that nostalgia and love for edged tools started nagging at me, literally out of the blue. And so I end up stumbling into BladeForums last fall, and I somehow come across one of Andy's kepharts in maroon canvas, and I'm hooked, even before I do the research that proves what incredible tools these knives really are.
I'm a pastor, and money has been so tight for so long that I have a hard time splurging on myself. For the first time in years I've got a little to spare income-wise and I've kind of been saving for a Fiddleback, but as I said, I have a hard time spending money like this on myself. These past years my life has grown more and more sedentary, and as a result.... let's say my pants don't fit as well as they used to. In addition, my father has been diagnosed with three somewhat major health complications as a result of his sedentary lifestyle and the extra weight he has been carrying all these years.
Which brings me to the challenge. A Fiddleback is my carrot. I lose 20 pounds by July 1*and I can buy a Fiddleback. The Frau is behind this (she's an exercise freak, so this thrills her), and I really think this can provide the motivation I need.*
I guess I'm posting this to make it real, and so you all might offer up any cosmic goodwill you have. I've already witnessed what an amazing community this is, and I look forward to more fully becoming a part of it in the future.*
Thanks for humoring this hungry, sore lurker (usually).
Michael
