Hello All !! This is my first post as I'm new to the forums. My neighbor is a Marine and Combat Veteran, and he has a nice collection of knives. I thought his collection was nice and decided to get a few knives for my own personal collection. He recomended Kershaw, and said that they are high quality and reasonably priced. I have a EDC now but it is an old Gerber and not the greatest knife in the world. I just bought 2 knives to alternate as my EDC's, and plan to retire the Gerber to the tackle box. I bought the Kershaw Tanto Groove and the Kershaw Junkyard dog 1720. I love the looks of both and they are both scary sharp right out of the box. What are some opionions on the 2 knives I chose to start my collection with ?? I want to eventually have like 10 nice knives for my collection. The next knife on my list is the Ken Onion leek. My neighbor also recommended Bench Made but they are insanely expensive !! I want you guys to add you own "Must Have" knive recomendations for my collection. I don't want to spend more than 80$ on any 1 knife, so feel free to recommend knives for me !! This is an awesome forum and I look foward to your responces. Thanks !!

Benchmade Mini Griptilian.

Lots of handle colors and blade grinds to choose from. Thumb studs or thumb holes. You will love the Axis Lock.

Great knife and it's within your price range.

You should be able to find something in the Spyderco lineup for that price too.

First off, welcome to Bladeforums!

Excellent choices with Kershaw, by the way. That's an impressive start! I love the Tanto Groove and JYD.

For the leek, may I suggest the Random Leek as well as the Composite-bladed leek. Both have excellent, high-end steels.

Also, for more knives:

Zero Tolerance 0350, 0400

More Kershaws! :D

If you're looking for a different brand, then Spyderco and Benchmade are very good recommendations.

I say get some of the classic cheaper knives to beat on and try out. get a feel for them practice sharpening and use for things you don't want to mess up your expensive knives for.

Mora (I like the clipper best, but the standard, highq, craftline, pick your model all of them are great)
Opinel
Buck 110
SAK (I think everyone should have a swiss army knife Victornix or Wenger, I like my Wenger
S10 for the grip shape and the locking blade)

Everyone should have a Victorinox in their collection. (and on them)
May I suggest one of the Alox models; Cadet, Pioneer or Farmer.

And welcome :)

Welcome to BF. Two great knives to start with, both are in my EDC rotation. Another must have Kershaw in your collection would be the RAM and the OD-1. Both are in your price range? Spyderco Delica and Endura are must haves as well. Welcome to the addiction.

I highly recommend the Spyderco TENACIOUS, Persistence or Ambitious for someone like yourself just getting started. Check out the reviews. Good luck at keeping your collection to 10 knives. :) You will eventually decide weather you prefer assisted opening or manual, stud, hole or flipper, length of blade and or handle that suits YOUR needs the best. In my opinion everyone needs 1 or 2 large blades but for EDC I think you'll enjoy the 2.75 to 3.25 inch range.

Spyderco Native in s30v and FRN
Benchmade Bone Collector mini axis
Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in ZDP-189
I love my Kershaw Clash as well, but I ground out the recurve

If you hunt around you can find the Benchmade 530 for about $85. weighs in at 1.8 oz. One of my favorite light task EDC's. besides that the mini griptilian, spyderco's, and the like are all great choices for your price range. Welcome to the addiction!

I have something you will absolutely love
It is the duane dwyer custom DDC CC SMF from knifeart
It is a little out of your price range, butttttt, it is a sweet knife ;)

Just kidding. I would recommend the kershaw energ 2. it is insanely fun to flip, takes a scalpel edge, holds it for a while, and is pretty solid. it is my work knife currently.

I suggest a Victorinox knife such as a Recruit. They get even more functional with more tools, but also pretty bulky. I wouldn't go over 3 row/springs IMO. I also really like the Boker Trance. It has good ergos, carries flat, and is cheap.

jep and the CRKT Drifter.

Are you interested in fixed blades at all?

If so, a BK2 is $65, an Izula maybe >$60, Bark River PSK is about $80, BLind Horse Knives Tiger Knapp is $50

Case makes lots of great pocket knives, anywhere up from $25

There are some fantastic Benchmade and Spyderco knives in the budget range, just to give a try out. Also recommend getting different lock types, so you can try them out.

Benchmade, I really loved my Monochrome (30 bucks or so), which is a frame lock.

HK 14650 is a fantastic little liner lock. It's got a ball bearing in the lock, so the blade literally flies out when you flick it. I still have yet to find a knife that opens more smoothly than that one.

Kershaw RAM is one of the more popular Kershaw offerings. Has a little side button lock of some sort. Not sure what that lock is called.

Spyderco Tenacious is a fantastic liner-lock starter knife for Spyderco. Full Flat Ground, very nice, especially considering that it's cheaper than 50.

Buck Vantage Pro is another good one, and Kershaw Blur in S30V as well.

Be aware, once you get any of those knives, you're gonna be in TROUBLE.

I'd also recommend a couple which are a bit outside your price range, but I think you would not regret buying them:

Benchmade/Doug Ritter RSK1 Ritter Griptilian. AXIS lock (my favorite on the market) and S30V steel. It's my EDC, and while I'll probably try to get some carbon fiber scales for it, it's a fantastic knife as is. Runs 119 + shipping.

Spyderco Manix 2. My favorite Spydie. The only Spyderco knife with a Ball-Bearing lock, which is a lot like the AXIS lock. Great edge geometry and good heat treat on the 154CM steel. Might be able to find those in your price range.

I'll go ahead and wish your pocketbook good luck.
