Karl Anderson makes the most beautiful stainless San-Mai blades I have ever seen. Thanks to Karl for the inspiration.
Thanks to Ed Caffrey, and Bill Burke for information they provided on this forum about the process.
The outside of the blade started out as 6" of 3/16" 410 stainless steel. The core is 1/4" 0-1 steel.
I forged it together and drew it out under my 100lb power hammer to 10" long.
In grinding the blade I could not believe how hard the forge scale on the ss was.
I was tempted to use my ladder pattern dies, but hearing how easy it was to separate the ss from the 0-1 I decided not to.
The blade has some wavy lines, but I would like to make one with more of a ladder pattern. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
