My first axe

That would have been a very sweet deal! Same basic axe as the Dayton 4#felling axe.

I look forward to getting my boys axe. According to ben's it has already shipped.

So would I. I'd consider anything less than 45° off vertical to be OK and this haft is only 25° off vertical. Not an issue. Plus it shows the wide grain of a fast-growing 2nd growth tree. Up to 40 growth rings per inch is OK. Less than 20 is preferred. That haft has maybe 16. So it has essentially perfect ring spacing. Spend a little more time working on the edge and you'll have a great working axe.

Square Peg, this is great information on the ring count. Can you tell where your source for this is? I'm not questioning your info, I just want to learn a little more about the information you shared.

My regards, Double Ott
P.S. I did print off your info and saved it.

Somewhere else I read that 8-20 growth rings per inch was ideal.

Strike that. It's 5-20 growth rings per inch.
