My first Becker knife (Blade Show)

Auraria,

I figure that I'll need three. One for her, one for me and one for the BOB. Then I'll start all over again with additional knives. Of course, I should probably finish the BOB as well.

Moosez45,

I was the short, stocky bald guy who had his wife with him Saturday morning. Sometime around 11:00 a.m.

Get two BK2s also, one for the BOB and one for the smaller chopping/battoning! :p

I'm thinking a BK16 or BK17. That will allow me to carry it at other times as well. It turns out that I may need to get a weapons permit in order to carry my BK9 anyplace other than camping. That should be fun. Been meaning to get one anyway.

the 16 is glorious -- the 24 is also pretty nice, especially once you put scales on it.
Check out Tomar's -- your addiction may be more affordable than you fear. :D

But I also want the 15 as well. :) Though I'd also like a slightly smaller version of the 15, about the length of the 16, as well.

Well, I sharpened up the BK9 to 20 degrees and went out to cut back the jungle that is the wild portion of my yard. The blade worked like a dream. Everything wither cut on the first stroke or with just a few chops. However, after I was done, I noticed a couple of nicks near the tip of the blade. Nothing major, but how common is it for this to happen? Do I have too fine of an edge on the blade?

Thanks,
-Ivarr, the still learning.

20 degrees on a side or 20 degrees inclusive? (i.e. 10 degrees on a side)
if 20 degrees inclusive, the edge is too thin.
otherwise, you may have hit something hard while chopping (rock, fence wire, etc...) -- or possibly a knot if cutting through wood.
since the nicks were near the tip, I'm going to suspect you hit something hidden.

It's 20 degrees on each side. Thanks for the information. It must have been a knot. Either that or a giant mosquito. I got eaten alive within 15 minutes.

I'm using a Spyderco SharpMaker. It's what I have and seems to work.

knots are bad for edges -- especially evergreen knots (they're a lot like hitting a piece of glass) -- due to the fact that the wood grain goes in all directions at once, which causes a lot of lateral stress.
