your choice! If its the black coating, I say sand it or just leave it. If its the steel, I say send it in.

Chis, if I can call you Chris. If you are unhappy with your purchase, contact the dealer, or Kabar directly, and let them know. That is not factory standard, and if it bothers you, you should get it replaced. Toooj is a member here, and will more than likely see this thread, and tell you to send it to him, but I would call the dealer that bought it from first, and if they don't satisfy your needs, call Kabar. They will fix you up, I promise.

Could you maybe take a photo of it looking down on it? The reason I ask is if the dent has the black coating on it that would indicate that its a factory defect, if it has not coating and there is exposed steel it would indicate that it was maybe dropped or he with a hard object.

As Moose said, send it back if your not happy.

its in the steel. but i think i can hit it a couple of times on the belt sander with some 80 grit to bring it down a little past the notch. but i will then have to strip the black coating.
its a shame my first experience with becker is a bust. how could they have let this leave the plant? I work in a production plant who makes high caliber
fishing yachts on the east coast. We pay special attention to every little detail before releasing our product to the customer. 76 feet of boat compared to nine inches of blade...
comon becker!!!!!

Before you lay down judgment give them a chance to fix it.

How many boats do you have leaving the line everyday? Couple dozen? Couple hundred? How about a couple thousand? How about a couple of 10 thousands?

Making a luxury yacht is not like making a hard use knife, by the THOUSANDS!! Give me a break. Its small flaw that doesn't effect the function of the knife, if you are unhappy, call them and give them a chance to make it up to you.

I don't understand how somethings make it through, but I do understand that it happens and Kabar will do what it takes to make it right, I promise.

oh i know they will certainly take care of the problem for me but i dont have the time to send it in to them..
im just bothered that something that obvious made it out to a customer ordering his first... but otherwise, the handle feels great in hand,
the balance is good and i like the fact that the handle scales can easily be replaced just by using an allen wrench..

i edited your prior post for you...

you should attempt to edit a post if posting an image doesn't work, not keep posting with different attempts... else you'll have strings of posts with junk urls...

well, making a luxury yacht is probably more taxing. someone buying one of those is not just buying a boat, they are buying luxury. they ARE buying perfection. they expect, and they DEMAND every last detail to be bloody perfect or they'll be cry babies about it. i'd also suppose that the maker would send a tech around, in person, and take care of the issue.

some production items, regardless of cost, are exact clones of the ideal. perfect fit and finish. japanese companies are fanatical about this. apple insists on it. 100s or 1000s of moving parts. nintendo DS? costs about what a BK9 costs. flawless.

generally, i'm going to expect my production knives to be pretty durn good. i'll accept slight variations even. i usually expect better than custom one offs (because mistakes happen), but not necessarily as good as custom production where the artist has some practice. some production knives are amazing. they're also more expensive too. Microtech comes to mind. that kind of CNC is not cheap though.

i'll also accept that sometimes you just get a dud. there are few to almost no circumstances where i expect the end user to have to mod his brand new factory item to remove a flaw.

in this particular instance, i'm with the consumer. that knife should not have left the factory. it's glaringly obvious something is not right.

course, i FULLY expect KaBar will do the right thing, but they're going to want to check this one out.
