a little help for ya

How many boats do you have leaving the line everyday? Couple dozen? Couple hundred? How about a couple thousand? How about a couple of 10 thousands?

Making a luxury yacht is not like making a hard use knife, by the THOUSANDS!! Give me a break. Its small flaw that doesn't effect the function of the knife, if you are unhappy, call them and give them a chance to make it up to you.

I don't understand how somethings make it through, but I do understand that it happens and Kabar will do what it takes to make it right, I promise.

wow moose. really? comon dude. your right though, no big deal, i hope i didn't offend anybody else here besides moose.

christopherpap,

If the ding is covered with black powder coat, it is a defect from the factory and not acceptable. Please contact Knifecenter.com. They should accept it as a defect in the knife. If you do not get satisfaction from them, please call KA-BAR and we will replace it. I'm out of the office for a couple of days next week but I'll make sure the proper people will know about your problem. One way or the other, the problwm will be corrected.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

I wasn't offended, all I wanted to do was point out the lack of similarity between making a fishing yacht and thousands of knives a day. That's all.

No worries, I'm not mad or offended, I still like ya, and hope you get your issue resolved. Promise. :D

its in the steel. but i think i can hit it a couple of times on the belt sander with some 80 grit to bring it down a little past the notch. but i will then have to strip the black coating.its a shame my first experience with becker is a bust. how could they have let this leave the plant? I work in a production plant who makes high caliber
fishing yachts on the east coast. We pay special attention to every little detail before releasing our product to the customer. 76 feet of boat compared to nine inches of blade...
comon becker!!!!!

If you decide to hit it with the sander instead of sending it in for a new one you don't have to strip all the blade coating. I used a sanding drum on my cordless drill to achieve a polished spine on my BK9 while leaving the rest of the coating intact.

Just reutrn it if you aren't happy. Test their customer service and then write a review about the experience. Why settle with a bad after taste?

thanks tooojs! yea im still toying with the idea of just sanding it down past the chip. unless you think they need me to send it in so they could anylize it or something haha.... but otherwize i think i can handle this one...
ps. im not turning my back on you guys, i might even order a bk2 because i like the shape and handle options these knives offer. consider me a beckerhead dispite the little flaw.

that is a great idea! looks nice

That's just a minor flaw, it won't affect the usability of the knife. I understand you are a bit bummed about that, but as toooj stated at an earlier point (in another thread) the qc is what really costs money in the end. Becker knives are designed to be tools, not safequeens. I had 2 Becker knives in my hand so far, and they both had some minor finish flaws, like uneven grinds or little dents in the factory edge. But the slightly sloppier QC is what makes the knife that cheap in the end.

And seriously... you want perfect finish on a 9" knife that costs 75$ ? Aint gonna happen. You want a knife that looks like a piece of art? Buy a Busse. But expect the 300+ price tag.

I'm not criticizing your decision in any way, it's just my opinion. A knife like the BK9 deserves some battle scars, and in a few months or years you won't even remember which one was there from the start.

your right, im feeling better and better about this little imperfection the more we talk about it. thanks guys. i might just leave it the way it is and just consider the little spot "character", i will take pics of it chopping through logs and various things (thanks to maethor and fairweather showing me how to post pics) and you beckerheads will say "hey i know that knife". toooj thanks for the support and sory for being so critical

About 17 years ago I bought an Audiolab 8000A integrated hi-fi amplifier for the equivalent of around 1,800$ . It came with a defective tone bypass button . I could return it instantly (the store technician came to install it) but I figured out I'll never going to use this button anyhow (it's always in the "bypass" position) , and didn't want to spend time and energy on this. 17 years later , the amp still works great , and the bypass button is still defective , and I never bothered to fix it .
What is the point of my story ?
I guess it is - If you will enjoy your purchase anyhow , sometimes the hassle of sending it back or fixing it yourself just isn't worth it . If that ding will take some of your joy forever , by all means fix it or replace it .
Just my 2 cents .

Edit : OK , Just saw your last post...

Do the yachts cost more than $70-80? It's a bummer your knife wasn't perfect ( like mine :D ) but it's a user, not a work of art. Not piling on - just poking at ya a bit.

The knife in your pics would give me a somewhat different problem. First, I'm *slightly* tempted to reprofile my BK9 anyway to grind the swedge down to that next line - for a more classic bowie shape. Second, I'm tempted to strip mine anyway. With that ding, I'd be a bit more tempted to do both.
