My First Benchmade?

Thanks all for the information - I just did some googling on it. I will check out knifeworks as suggested. I don't own any Benchmade yet but this looks like a good intro to the company. They retail here for over $200 plus.

I've done a lot of reading, browsing, youtubing and finally think I've settled on the Benchmark 940. I was planning on spending $200 but...

I'd loooove to sell you a 940 for $200 bucks but I'd be ripping you off :) You can get one for $125 on that online bookstore right now. lol. The "bay" has them for that or a bit more aaaaaaall day long. Enjoy.

I have been trying to control myself and not tire everyone with it but....RIFT!!! Check out the 950 for a great EDC blade or the 14205 as a somewhat beefier and thicker blade. The 950 with the awesome AXIS lockis my all time favorite knife.

You and I can takes turns telling em if you like. ;)

Hard to put it into words but i use this knife all the time, I don't carry anything else regularly.

I've finally settled but haven't had 5 mins all day to sit down and order it... BlackBerry + forums > BB + shopping!

I will say what I ordered once the transaction is confirmed and yes I'm needlessly paranoid. :p

I didn't quite reach $200 and will likely order a belt clip, wood grips, and/or a new clip for my Micro Desert Eagle. Its a sexy compact firearm and deserves some love.

EDIT: I actually went to my GF who is a military brat and she helped me decide. I had so many I liked and wanted that I could not make up my mind!! And yes I know -2 man card points... But seriously, she had a father who was in the military and 2 older brother, so she knows how important man toys are. She's never asked why I have 5 guitars (3 that cost over $1k) and a half stack. Mainly because I don't even know why even if she did. :p

So what did you decide on? If you are getting a Benchmade it might be worth your time to check out knifeworks. They have a coupon code to brind the price of Benchmade knives down below what they are allowed to advertise.

No it is called the Bone collector and there is a large and small. It has G10 and D2 blade and the grips haven't changed. There is a model number that goes with them but I don't know it off the top of my head. I actually have one on the way to me so hopefully it will be as nice as the pictures look. I doubt it will top the Rift though.

I have both, and lemme tell you that they are pretty different knives.
BUT that's not to say that they are bad. I can't even begin to tell you how much I lusted over BOTH OF THEM. They each have their own special place in my heart.

I want to point out a couple of things, though. The Bone Collector (BC) is NOT a Griptillian derivative. Those two knives have even less in common than the BC and the Rift do. The BC has solid non-skeletonized steel liners along the full length and width of the handles, an aluminum back spacer and sculpted G-10 scales. In fact, the BC has waaaay more in common with the 520 Presidio than the Griptillian. The Griptillian has partial steel liners and a molded composite resin handle that is more like a hollow shell. The Grip is a great knife, despite these differences. The ergonomics are fantastic, and it's a strong knife that also happens to be very lightweight. The BC has noticeably more heft, girth, length, and overall swagger. The blade is wider than the drop point 550HG Griptillian's, and it has a snubbier point.

Then there's the 950 Rift, which is like none of the above. It too has solid steel liners along the entire handle width & length with sculpted G-10 scales. Its profile is unique, though, and does not borrow from either the Presidio or the Griptillian in its profile/shape. Blade shape is unique, as well. You can see some similarities with the 940's shape, mainly because they're designed by the same guy. However, the Rift is a unique creature unto itself, which I believe is one of the chief reasons I love it so much. I get giddy every time I pick mine up, and I pinch myself to see if I'm dreaming.

Moral of the story: Get a Rift or a Bone Collector and you will not be disappointed. But there will probably come a time when you want to own both.

I ended up going with the Benchmade 12800BK-801 and the Benchmade 530BK.

Over the weekend I got a chance to hold both the 530 and the 12800 (serrated not plain). The 530 was extremely pleasant to handle. It was small, super thin and so light it was scary. The 12800 was the NRA serrated version but it felt solid and like it could handle my cutting tasks with both ease and style. I'm excited and can't wait till I have them both in hand! I just hope I didn't make a mistake by going with the black instead of plain blades on the 530...

I was wanting to spend $200 on a knife and I walked away just above that and got both a light and medium duty knife.

Nice choices, I love my 530, it is an awesome blade. Was going to add my vote for the 940, but looks like you picked a nice one as well.

Ya I really wanted the 940 but the 12800 will be what I wanted specifically. Plus the fact that I was able to physically hold one identical helped tons.

A lot of people are turned off by the "different" blade shape of the 12800. But from talking with several people that own and use a 12800, they say that blade shape cuts extremely well. Add in the M-4 steel and it should perform even better. I think you made good choices.
