My First BK2 - initial thoughts

Thanks for the pics! I've been looking at getting a BK-2 for a while but have been on the fence because of the 1/4" thickness(had an RC-5 and sold it). I know it gets great reviews and all but I think I need to find somewhere to handle one first I think before I pull the trigger. Unfortunately the closest knife shop(1 1/2 hours away) says there outta' stock. :( But I keep seeing all these great pics and reviews and I'm getting closer to falling off that fence! haha

Just order it I say...It feels too heavy the first day or 2 anyway, But then it feels just right.:)

I know the feeling. JV3 showed me his BK2 right after I ordered my ESEE5. it came in, I took it out once, and then I turned around and traded it on the exchage for a BK2. Much mo' betta!

Here are a couple of outdoor pics from the first BK2 use.

Chopped a bit on this old dead branch that was really hard, I believe it was walnut, then I made a feather stick.

Main goal was accomplished, the BK2 got a little action. I was amazed at how agile this hunk of steel actually is!

This is the Son digging kippers out of the can with his new knife (not a Becker, but he gets a Becker when he can keep track of this one for a year).

All in all was a great way to spend a Saturday, we all got muddy and spent the majority of the day in the timber.

one more question on the BK2....I have been reading quite a bit on it........there were some people complaining about the sheath being too tight, and then on another link in here someplace I saw where you can buy it online already modded out with the micarta handle and a different kydex sheath.......so now I am wondering if I will be happy with the stock handle/sheath or whether the micarta/kydex handle/sheath would be better.....I would appreciate any opinions or guidance - thanks

Great pics of your new knife.... Can't wait to own a BK-2. I am kinda insane for not purchasing one yet...

You may be referring to a thread where I complained about my new BK2 sheath, but I would advise you to understand that I still wouldn't answer your question in this thread. It's a completely subjective question that cannot be answered beyond a simple wild guess as to what you might be happy with. The one I just got is my third Ka-Bar BK2, but the first one I had any complaints about the sheath with. If I were to honestly try to answer your question according to my own first-hand experience, I'd have to say that I'm 66% sure that you will be happy with the stock sheath just the way it comes out of the box. But Hell, I'm not really 66% sure about much in life, including whether or not I'll even wake up tomorrow. I just don't know whether you'll like the stock sheath or not. Don't have a clue.

However, even if you get one of the super-tight ones, there are a couple of very easy fixes for it, which, if you're willing to employ, I could say that there's a nearly 100% chance that you'd end up happy with it, if tightness was the only criteria being used to make that evaluation.

As close as I will come to answering your question is to say that there's no need to spend the extra money for an aftermarket sheath before you even have the stock one in hand to evaluate and/or modify to your liking.

thanks Blues, you are correct, I was referring to what had been written on it in that thread you were in.......as long as its fixable with the hair dryer then I am not going to worry about it

By the time you pay gas money to go an hour and a half away, you could just buy a BK2. And UPS will bring it right to your door!!!

Nick - I will tell you that I fixed the tightness on my sheath right quick by drilling out the rivet closest to the handle on the blade side in the sheath. Just like that and then my BK2 released nice and easy while still staying in (even when mounted down by Molle). Simple and no $.

Thanks for the replies!
As for the sheath, it was tight new out of the box, but after just a little use and technique it is absolutely fine. I spent most of last weekend in a turkey blind with my Son last weekend, since the turkeys weren't cooperating we whittled a lot! I had 4 different knives with me and the BK2 go used 90% of the time. I'm really loving that blade!

I'm actually thinking a 14 will be my next, however a 9 after that!
