my first bowie (ALL DONE, PIX ADDED)

So I managed to get back out into the shop tonight. Drilled out the tang, then got to hand sanding. Had a decent 400 grit machine finish on it but decided to take it back to 220 grit then 320 and stopped at a dirty 400. only took pics of one side as the both look the same anyway.

Thanks for looking

Good work, Jason. I'm a little concerned you might have removed too much material from the tang. I'm not seeing how you'll pin the handle with centered pins, as you only have one centered hole that I can see.

I think for that size knife I'd go a little bigger. I hadn't even noticed it the firt time around. Little bigger would be more proportional to my eye.

Greg Thanks for your concern. However I think it is the camera angle and all the other holes making it look funny.

the 3 holes with black "X" will get the 1/4" stainless pins the 2 I connected with the line I used my digital calipers to scribe the line down as far as where the handle drops then I finished the line with a straight edge.

I see you mentioned that before, my bad. Not my choice of material but I bet it will still look really great.

I finaly decided to cough up the dough for a knifemakers membership, well worth the money for all the support and knowledge I have gotten from everyone here. I just hope I can live up to the title....

package is in the mail on it's way to canadian knifemaker supply for HT. handle scales have been ordered and they are not purple! :P
still felt too butt heavy to me so I connected a couple of the holes in the tang. now ballance is about 3" forward of the plunge. handle scales should bring the balance back nicely. I also decided to sand out my flats a little better, and do a bit nicer 400X finish on the blade.
here's where it was at right before I packed it up.

It looks great except for the small gaps at the front of the liners. Other than that, it is a very nice design and looks like it was a ton of fun to make.

Nice! But the question I have is were you pleased with the way the handle came out? You seemed concerned when you got the scales.

Thanks guys

right in between the liners and the tang. It may be the pics, but there sure do seem to be small gaps.
