Hi folks.

I've never done a WIP before, so thought i would this time, along with making my first Bowie. Forgive me if its not upto the standard of some of the other WIP threads i have seen. :)

Ok, here we go.

This knife is being made for the Bushcraft UK knife comp, i agreed with one of the members there that i would make a stick tang knife for the first time. I didn't want to make a puukko though. I've always admired a certain Bowie i had seen online, so i used that for the inspiration for this one. Its not your standard clip point style of bowie, i prefer this style.

The steel is 4.6mm D2, and the knife has a 10" Blade and will have an overall length of around 15"

Here are the starting materials i had, A big piece of D2, some 6mm angle brass, and a nice block of Yew for the handle.

Blank cut out and shaped

Ready to start grinding. I had to clamp an extra piece of steel to my grinding plate to accommodate the size of the blade, as this is waaay bigger than the normal bushy type knives i've made for the last 3 years.

A couple of hours later, the rough grinding is done

A couple more hours had the blade ready for HT, and leaving me with sore fingers

Time to make the bolster fitting. Off to the milling machine..I still haven't decided in what style i'm going to make the bolster yet, so i just got the slot sorted and all fitting nicely to the blade. I used a 4mm cutter and some nice files to get a good fit. I'll think on what i'm going to do with it tonight. Its all got to be finished tomorrow

The blade was then sealed in stainless steel foil, ready to go in the oven.

In it goes, for a heat treat process that will take the best part of 7 hours.

Thats where i am with it now, Its going to be a long night....

Thanks for looking folks.
More to follow tomorrow. :)

I love me a good WiP.
How do you like your oven?

Update...

Atm the handle is on, just waiting for the epoxy to cure. Some pics from today.

I started the day making the bolster, i decided to go with a coffin shape to match the handle.

Thinning down the area that will be the guard

Bolster roughly finished at this stage, I'll only get scratched if i put the finish on it now.

Drilling the handle, which is now African Blackwood, rather than yew.

Nice grain to it. :)

A dry fit, its a bit loose like this but wont be when complete. This gives you a good idea what it will look like, the handle needs shaping properly and refining, but that will be done when its all glued and pinned in place

Thats it thus far, i'll crack on again when the epoxy has cured in a bit.

Getting finished by midnight for the comp though....... nailing helium to the floor springs to mind :D

Hope your enjoying it. :)

That's looking very good....

As soon as I saw the handle and guard on the blade was - yep...

Thanks mate, i'm quite pleased with how its turning out. :)

Its only taken me 35 hours........... so far

Thanks :)

I'm back on it.

JP - when i make something, i crack on with it. I expect its going to have taken around 40 hours on the knife alone, i've had to think on my feet for this one :)

Had an issue drilling the tang yesterday, the cobalt bits i had wouldn't touch it. I ordered a carbide bit which arrived today...
Heres hoping....

The handle is rough shaped now. Next step is a careful hand finish so as not to lose the definition.

first the flats were shaped to match the bolster, i did this free hand on the belt.

Then i bevelled the top corners and around the rear of the handle.

I was going to bevel the bottom of the handle too, but i couldn't get to it on the machines due to the guard...grrr. So i rounded it underneath instead, which makes the handle very comfortable.

This is how it looks now, ready for the next stage. The grain on this is lovely, it has a translucent effect when held in the light.

More to follow this evening. :)

Well the knife is pretty much done, sheath still to make of course so if you want a WIP on that aswell, let me know.

All comments welcome and if anyone has any critique, feel free to post it. This was a first stick tang and first bowie, so there will be much room for improvement.

Enjoy... and thanks for following the thread and bearing with me... :)
