I bought a Steel Heart Heavy Heart to use in the woods. Its my first big knife so I dont have anything else to compare it to. I wanted a knife to take hunting, and hiking with me so I could clear brush or chop down a limb. I took it out for the first time time today, and I got to say I was not imppresed. It didnt seem to chop very well and after four or five hits it hurt my hand. Is there someting Im doing wrong or is there someone I could get to put a better edge on it?

I've a Fusion Steel Heart Heavy Heart - is that the one you mean?

It's one of the best choppers I've got and possibly my favourite knife of all. I've chopped some nasty well-seasoned hard wood with it, and softer stuff, and it performs admirably.

I have reprofiled the edge, putting a bevel of about 30 degrees inclusive on it, and mirror polished that. It's hair popping sharp.

Mine has the thicker, magnum grips which I find fit my hand much better than the standard thickness slabs.

Could you post a picture of yours? I wonder if it's just in need of a good sharpening. Was it a user before you got it?

Also, and I don't mean to be condescending or anything here, do you have a good technique for chopping with a heavy knife? Good tachnique makes a big difference and it's a matter of practice to get it just right. I keep a slightly lose wrist and like just a bit of 'slip' on the grip as the knife bites in. Don't keep too tight a grip or seize your muscles up.

An HHFSH heavy heart fusion steel heart? Or an Ash1 anniversary steel heart? Sounds like you got a pinky pinching Ash1 to me, the HHFSH is an amazing knife.

Yes its the fusion Steel Heart Heavy Heart, and I got it brand knew. Who could I get to sharpen it?

Ban comes to mind for a killer zero edge... there's a wait, but well worth it. My HHFSH is a beast, sorry yours is a disappointment, if you just want it sharpened and not convexed send it to Busse.

How much do HHFSH's go for from busse? Or are they discontinued? That loks like an amazing knife and I also was looking to get a first busse. Thanks hope im not hijacking.

I got it from the company store a while ago just never had the chance to use it. Yes i think it is discontinued. It was over 300

+1 what foxyrick wrote above. While there are ways to "improve" a Busse, it shouldn't be necessary for what you're doing. Since you don't have any experience chopping with a big knife, you should pick up a $7 machete and compare. Once you do IMO you'll see that you like your FSH just fine.

I just recently picked a Skinny Ash-1 and love it. For a shorter knife it chops really well if I keep a loose grip...tense up and it don't work that well. I can take and kinda flip my wrist and slice through small weeds and stuff with a nice clean diagonal cut, very fun. Plus the Ash performed well field dressing a deer this weekend, got cleaned up and chopped onions and carrots for the pot later that night. I love it and carry it with me everywhere I go.

If it just needs sharpening, the Busse shop will do that for free. So call them first. Ban can put an amazing polished convexed edge on it, but that will void the warranty.

or, just sell it to me!

I doubt sharpening will make a difference if you don't like the feel of the knife.
I would go bigger. The nice thing is that you can get rid of the one you have and break even, or even better on the deal.
Sharper is not going to make the handle work for you...
