I just received my first Byrd knife from UPS this morning. I had a tough time deciding which model to get, but I finally decided on the Meadowlark. I wanted something fairly small, but still big enough to get the job done. I also decided to go with the G10 with the plain edge. I've never been a fan of the serrated edge, and I wanted to see what G10 was like.
First Impressions:
I got the knife out of the box, and I was immediately impressed. It has a good bit of heft and feels solidly constructed. I felt that the G10 was sufficiently "grippy." It has just enough friction to stay in your hand, but not too much so that it may stick in your pocket when you pull it out. When I first opened it, I noticed the thumb hole edges were maybe a bit sharp, but not enough to cut myself. I also thought the blade was a bit tough to get open. The pivot joint feels like it is a bit dry. I have a feeling that a little Militec-1 will make the opening/closing as smooth as butter. There is also one other point that is sharp near the bottom end of the knife. I think that some super fine sandpaper can clear up the sharp points though.
Testing:
I tested the knife against my arm hairs and now my arm has a few bald spots! It was super sharp out of the box. I later took the knife to work tonight (I work at a Farm/Home store where there are a lot of boxes to break down). I broke down around 10 boxes of so, and the knife performed beautifully. It sliced right through every box I threw at it. The knife is still almost as sharp as it was out of the box. There isn't any blade play at all. It feels like the lock is very secure. I'm not worried about it failing on me.
Other Thought:
On the Spyderco website, and www.knifecenter.com (the site I bought the knife from), the pictures of the G10 Meadowlark both have stainless steel clips. However, the particular knife I received has a black clip. Is there actually a G10 Meadowlark that has a regular SS clip or are all of the clips black? I was just wondering as I would prefer a model with a SS clip.
Conclusions:
The Meadowlark G10 knife is a great knife for the price. For around the $25 price point, I don't think the Byrd brand can be beat. I'm very happy with my purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone.
