I received a Canal Street Cutlery Trapper in a trade yesterday and WOW! What a knife! I really can't get over the fit and finish. I couldn't find a flaw. Jigged amber bone matches perfectly on both sides and there is something about the D2 that differs from Queens. Seems sharper out of the box and harder. Though there is nothing wrong with Queen's D2. I'm having a great time with this knife. It just feels good. How do you feel about your Canal's? I must get another. Gunstock, maybe?:D

Keep Cuttin',

It's all those little things that make it worthwhile.
You sound like a kid in a candy store. ;)
I need to get a Canal trapper in D2 for myself. Still looking.

Any chance of a photo or 2?

You should have seen me at SMKW.
I'm going to try and borrow my sisters camera. If I would stop buying knives I'd have one by know.

How do you feel about you Canal's?
I was less than thrilled with the quality of my first Canal Street knife, the Swing Guard. But my subsequent purchases from them, a Ring Opener and Drop Point Hunter, have been very satisfying.

Glad to hear your's is a good one too. Actually, all of the recent reviews point to an increase in consistent quality. Good for Canal Street. :)

 On Canal, as most of you may know Wally Gardiner is the man running the show(principals)! They are in one of the old ISC (Imperial Schrade Corp.) buildings with a bunch of the Schrade "cutlers" Wally himself was the last man to run the SHOW before they(ISC) went under (don't think it was his fault:)) But any hows they are making some exceptionaly nice blades!!

AND a small start up USA co. to boot!!!:D

I just got a Canal Street Canittler in this week and I was very impressed. It is almost too nice to use.

I know what you mean.

They don't have many knives on their site, but they're all good lookin'. I'm drooling over this Gunstock. I don't think I can fight it!

I have had my eye on a Canal Street knife for some time now, but just have not pulled the trigger yet. Sounds like they have some good product from what you all have written here.

Pbumba welcome to forum and that is a nice collection of whittlers you have there!

I been considering a ring opener as a gift for my father who is in his 80's. He has always carried a small pocketknife but really has difficulty opening one now. How difficult is this knife to open an is the ring opener more of a friction type knife? It appears to have a full backspring. I have a CS half trapper which has very little snap, are all CS's this way? Any input from someone who owns or has handled this knife would be appreciated.

grelcar, the ring opener is a very nice knife, great F&F and the A2 steel is excellent. It's not a friction folder, just uses the rings instead of the nick. There's not a whole lot of tension on opening though, so it shouldn't be a problem for your dad. A shot of oil in the joint helps the action a lot if things are a little stiff. I'd recommend when using these knives to only use the ring to partially open the blade, then open the rest of the way like you would any other knife. This greatly reduces fatigue on the ring assembly, and is how they were originally designed to be used back in the old days.

I'm odd man out here, and in a way I'm glad to be as other people have had good experiences with Canal St and I'm pleased for them. I have the single blade Half Moon Trapper in a higher line stainless, its jigging is nice, good too are the stainless liners,it looks a good knife,but...just open it. Where IS the spring and snap I ask myself? It is disaster weak in the extreme- even dangerous to use,in other words useless.I had a full size Trapper in D2 that had pathetic snap as well, the D2 belt knife has rough edges around the tang and scales which I don't find acceptable. I think belt knives should be smooth to the touch and not feel rough and sharp to hold. I realise others have had good experience and I don't quibble with that but I'm not chancing any more of my money on their knives. GEC make a very fine knife and without the drawbacks so that's my preference.

I own 2 Canal Streets a Stockman and a Muskrat and love both of them, as someone mentioned on a previous post I wish they would change their shield.

I acquired a CS Muskrat when they were still newish kids on the block as a company. They do make high quality knives which are a pleasure to own and use.

Why have you not sent it back? I would think if Canal is anything like the other Manufactures they will be happy to make it right or have you already tried sending it back.

Pbumba, those whittlers look great!
