My First Case... with a scratch

Try oiling it a bit more. If that doesn't work take a peek inside to see if it's dirty, and if it is a bit of oil, a q-tip and some time should take care of it.

Thatotherguy, how do you go about oiling a knife? Specifically this kind of knife.. Any and all help is appreciated as I am very new to knives in general. Thanks

Edit: I have mineral oil. Now what? lol

I ordered a Prime Stag Trapper and it had a similar mark from where the blade rubs the liner. It doesn't touch the edge but rather just the side of the blade. Both blades are slightly off center so it looks like it's from rubbing the liner. I like the stag though so I'm keeping it and using it as is. The nice part about having a good warranty is being able to use it if you want!

Oil the joints.

Put a single drop of oil in the pivot of each blade and work it in by opening and closing them. This works for lubrication and rust prevention. It should also make the opening and closing action more crisp.

PS- To get that nice crisp opening action, you might feel like doing a full-scale cleaning. It is not necessary, but if the knife has a whole lot of factory grit and dust in the pivot area, this will get it out... The process involves a soapy warm water wash (work blade joints then dry as best as possible), followed by WD-40 (work blade joints and clean off as best as possible), and finally a drop of oil per blade (work it in the joints).

Hopefully these methods will solve your problem but if not.............keep the one with the good snap.

You do still have both knives, right?

Better to have good snap and a scratch than the opposite.:)

I personally take a q-tip (corner of a bandanna or unlightable end of a paper match work just as well), dip it in the oil, and swab the tang of the knife at appx half open. Then I open and close the knife a few times and if needed repeat.

To the OP, I'm really sorry you're received the knives with the problems you describe. Ever since your earlier query, I've had my swayback jack in front of me again, and (not to rub it in) it's perfect. Up until now, and based not only on my own knife but on the pictures and reports of others', I assumed I could unequivocally recommend it as the pattern to buy for a well-made, problem-free Case.

I hope you come to a satisfactory resolution, but am sorry that you needed a second knife, and that even that one wasn't what the first one should have been.

To any of those who are for an update: I cleaned out the replacement, and while it got better over a couple days, the original knife was still much crisper. I ended up returning the replacement, and I plan on sending the knife to Case to have them buff out the wharncliffe and center the blades so they wont be rubbing against the liner anytime soon. I must say though, I love the knife. Perfect knife for a law office setting! My other knives are spydercos that have clips, but sometimes it is nice to have a knife to pocket carry. This knife is the perfect size for that. Big enough that feels great in the hand, but I dont feel it in my pockets. Good stuff.
