I finally picked up a nice Challenge Cutlery Co knife. I think I got a good one! 4 1/8" barehead jack in some nice stag. Good snap with half stops... and tight.

Very nice. Looks like someone clipped the spear blade's top line. Gorgeous stag.

That's a nice one! They knew how to properly cut the stag back then, one of my biggest problems with current production (and the primary reason I don't buy any) is that they grind off half of the bark to taper the stag into the bolsters.

I love how thin the stag is. Most of the stag covers I have seen are very thick

You are absolutely right, most (especially case) knives look like burnt bone instead of stag. Im guessing its too time consuming for a fully automated factory to cut and fit stag the old fashioned way.

Is there any good info out there about Challenge? Maybe an old catalogue page showing this knife? Im thinking 1920's?

Thanks

 A very nice piece that you will not tire of anytime soon. It would be nice to have more information about those old companies. Goins Encyclopedia of Cutlery markings suggests (if I interpret it correctly) that your knife was probably made from 1899 to 1926, and by looking at your photos, I would guess the earlier part of that range. Thanks for posting.

Nice!!!! The stag is awesome. That thing doesn't even need cleaning - just a quick going over with an oily rag and perhaps a good sharpening and it'll be good to go.

Congrats Dave, that's a sweetheart  I love to see stag handles like yours, just terrific! I love stag and prefer it thin like that, fat handles don't feel right in my hand.
