My First Custom Bowie

firstbowie14.jpg

Jack,
IIRC,The Hanson Bowie was my first Bladeforums Bowie and the first one Don made, the blade is sawblade steel and I've had a hard time figuring out what wood the handle is but the learned folks around have been trying to figure it out as well, rosewood is the general consensus.
Brass guard and pins.
All the best in your Bowie search.

I'm begining to see that custom knives is a very small world. I'd been to Leatherbird's photo collection before but didn't notice the knife and then came across a photo of that knife somewhere else.

What are the benefits of a forged blade as opposed to what I presume is the less expensive stock removal?

No short answer to that one, but it has been discussed a few times. Try the search function - there's lots of good info to be had that way.

As to your other question, I prefer a full hidden tang. I don't think steel makes a particularly comfortable handle material and don't like holding onto the stuff - particularly on a big knife meant to strike a big blow.

a little perspective. a Randall Smithsonian bowie, which is quite large, has a blade that is 11 inches long and 2 1/4 inches wide by 5/16 thick. and it is a handful. Anything wide than that will look clunky and will dwarf the handle. Check out the catalog on the Randall website.

That's another idea. What do you guys think of the Randall bowies? From just what I can see on the web, it looks like his operation is as close to "production" as handmade knives can be. I say that because, unlike the other sites, he seems to have stocks of specific models. Is there any validity to that? Are his knives as well made as a bowie from the other top makers?

I know I'm all over the map with these questions so please let me know if they should be in separate threads. :foot:

Jack,

Randalls: Good knives, nearly unobtainable from the makers. 2yr delivery time??? Very collectible and sought after by the Randall crowd.

Not a handmade knife by one person. Made by a team. Considered a production variant. Priced like a decent custom.

Here is my idea of the perfect carry bowie forged carbon steel 9 and 1/2 inch long blade. over 5/16 stock and a sharpened clip. there are lots of options out there but sometimes simple proven designs work best. Happy bowie hunting
