My first custom traditional

John's knives are always at a reasonable price. I've had a few of his, and I'm always happy with them.
Good choice on picking a John Lloyd. That stag is killer!

epetrillo,
You got a GREAT FOLDER.
SUPER STAG, NICE BLADE.
At 3 1/8" its a real jewel.
On a scale of 1 to 10, it's an easy TWELVE.
( as far as no bolsters, I think it was best without them to show off the stag ).

As good a set of stag covers as you'll ever be likely to find . . . so what do you do for an encore?? ;)

Excellent!. Love how the stag has a groove on both slabs, that follows the swayback of the lower part of the handle and flows effortlessly along the back curve of the wharcliffe blade, with the blade open. Nice!!!

Very well-chosen, epetrillo.

A good knife made by a good man-- a wonderful way to embark on your first custom foray. :)

The swayback pattern is timeless. Outstanding stag and a beautifully constructed folder. Congratulations are definitely in order! :)

That is a stunning knife. That stag is really beautiful.

I'm a huge fan of Wharncliffes, Swaybacks, and Stag. This is absolutely jaw dropping to me.

Swayback design goes back to the mid 1800's is that right?

Nice choice! John is a great guy and makes some fine knives, I have owned close to 10 at one time or another. The stag on yours is beautiful:thumbup:

I loved the stag as soon as I saw it but hesitated because I wasn't sure about the no bolster look. I am being won over though and I won't even have it in my hands until Monday. I understand that the lack of a bolster in this knife makes it a "shadow" style, is that correct? Does it pose any structural issues?

I used to feel the same way about shadow patterns and even bareheads, because I just thought that pocket knives were supposed to have bolsters. Thankfully I have since come to my senses.

Beautiful knife! The bark on that stag is just flat-out gorgeous!

Congrats! That stag is killer. John makes a great knife, and you'll never meet a nicer guy. Enjoy it and use it with pride.

I want to thank everyone for the kind comments on this knife and it's maker. I don't think I've been this excited about having a knife in the mail in a long time.

Only two problems with starting with a knife like that !!!!!!!
You are going to have a hard time finding one to be better than it !!!!!!
You will catch Stag Pox within a week after you get it and have a chance to coon finger it!!!!!

The knife arrived today and is really beautiful. The snappy and razor shape blade coupled with those stag handles make it something special. Only issue is that the blade is a little off center but it doesn't rub so I'm not going to worry about that. I plan to carry this knife every day as my second knife for smaller jobs. I hope that won't cause excessive wear on those beautiful scales.

I hope that won't cause excessive wear on those beautiful scales.

The best part about stag is that excessive wear actually makes it look better. Good stag is like a fine wine in that it has to mature for it's potential to develop. I'm lukewarm on most new stag, but once it gets some years under it's belt there's very little that can compare.
