My first Damascus knife

Not to be jerky, but did you understand he forged the steel with hand hammers only??? No hydraulic press, no power hammer, no rolling mill. That's akin to say, oh.... normally you'd paint your house with a paint sprayer, but since you don't have one, you paint it with the tiny brush inside the top of a bottle of fingernail polish.   ;) :)

I know you were still complimenting him... it's just that to get up to this layer count by hand is a very admirable accomplishment.  :)

Beautiful knife Stuart, but I wouldn't expect anything else! :)

No worries Nick. I do know how much work goes in to forging damascus, and I admire everybody who forges his/her own damascus.

Kind regards,

Jos

That is a cool-looking little knife Stuart - I think the low-layer pattern makes the most visual impact in that small blade and is nicely complimented by the cascading grain in the blackwood. Really nice work as always.

I'd like to add my "well done" as well. I'm sure that you have been bitten by the damascus bug now and I look forward to seeing more. BTW: There's not a thing wrong with a low layer damascus. In fact, it has been selling very well for me recently. It's all about pleasing the customer and no one can predict what they will want.

NICE JOB! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Overall I think the knife looks great.
I really, really like the loose pattern you have in your damascus.
My opinion is that the pattern is very dramatic with a random natural look.
Not sure if I am making sense.
But......based on visual appeal, I think you came up with a winner!

Thanks again guys.

I finally finished the sheath.

sheath is fantastic as well!

Very nice
Great works Stuart knowing that it's your 1st handmade damascus knife
Congrats to you and thanks for sharing :)

I still have the first piece of damascus I forged on the anvil. It is a sad little chunk of steel, not long enough or thick enough to make an acceptable blade, maybe a small folder:).
Stuart, your first efforts are amazing. I can't wait to see what you'll produce next. You are truly a very talented and fearless maker willing to try anything.

JUST noticed this today Stuart! It looks GREAT, and I too think the "low layer" damascus is a good choice for a small blade. Your sheath looks VERY good....I could easily think it was made by "the master" sheathmaker Paul!

I am really taken with that one Stuart. The heavy damascus grain cries use me. Its a tough guy, with weathered features..much like the barn board in your backround. It belongs outdoors.

ps. you mush have arms like Popeye now:D
