okay... drum roll please...
*drums roll down the street* okay heck with that! :(
like the title says... this is my first attempt at damascus. it was made from 1/2" cable i bought from Darren at the blade show.

well a picture is worth a thousand words... so i will shut up now

i have just had some time on my hands latly... no school no work..
and yes i did order my grinder... 2hp variable speed.... you wanna know the best part? the griner pluss the plantent pluss the work rests plus 50 odd belts... roughly 3 grand... i dont have to pay for it.
it was a "good job on getting a ful ride schollarship, here is something you need now that we dont ahve to pay for another cent of your education... and oh yeah it's your birthday" from my parents

Very nice, Chris. Did you twist the cable up tight before you forged it?
 
yes i actually twisted it to forge it. that is how i got the weld. then i hammered it very gently along the strands...
i just bought some more cable (1" this time) from darren.. gonna try 'er again

That is hardly NOT paying for it... sounds like it cost a ton, and that you completely earned it! If I heard tales such as yours from more in your age group I might have faith in the future, but alas! you are the exception, I fear.

Regardless, congratulations -- and nice blade!
 
Congratulations to you and your parents. You are obviously well on you way to becoming a true craftsman and artist as well as a very welcome contributor to society.
 
really clean classical design the colours look nice together! i hope to have a forge set-up like you someday.

Nice cable pattern you've got there.

Congratulations on the grinder, as someone else said, you earned every bit of it.

i twisted teh crap out of the cable, i guess that is what did the paterning... that and i forged it to shape rather than making it into a billet... it was really small though.

i got a full ride scholarship to the local community college via NASA. i am now in their apprentice program.. so for the next 5 years at least i am going to be a rocket scientist. i hope they will stick me in fabrication... i am hopeing to raid some trashcans there too.. i have heard they are a varitable gold mine. especially with the kind of high impact materials they are working with. stuff that makes carbon fiber and G10 look really wimpy and BudK ish. oh yeah.

Congrats on the scholarship! You should really take a close look at the field of physics or one of the engineering disciplines. I did my undergraduate work and one of my masters degrees in physics and it's a good field to get in to especially if you plan to pursue a ph.d.. If you don't plan to go for a ph.d., going the route of physics for an undergraduate degree and then some engineering discipline for graduate work will set you up well for pretty much anything! :)

Chris - you do really nice work. I have enjoyed seeing the work that you have posted - please continue posting! You have a really nice eye towards balance and color in your designs and your knives have a great flow through them. Enjoyed reading about your future plans - I have 4 kids - 3 in college and know how exciting this time in your life is. Keep knocking them out of the park!
