My first Emerson folder!

Safety Guy,

Glad to see another Columbus boy who loves Emersons. What karate school offered the Spyderco course? I am sorry I missed out on something like that. Do you have to be a member of the school to take the course, or were outsiders welcome? I just got two mini coms very recently, and I love them both. Mine locked up on the very left side of the tang area. ACtually they locked up very tightly, and I like all my new folders to lock up like that, that way I have plenty of room for them to wear in. In fact, given the choice, I will not buy a knife where the liner locks up in mid tang. I feel there is not enough room there to wear in. Might be just me, but I prefer a left side tang contact.

Hi Knife Boy! I took the Spyderco Martial Blade Craft Levels 1 and 2, taught by Michael Janich, at Grove City Karate. You didn't have to be a member to take it. Everyone was friendly and helpful there, and Janich was incredible. Good solid training, without moving too fast to additional concepts. Very FMA based, with five basic angles of attack. He may be back later in summer or fall with Levels 3 and 4. I'll try to make those as well. I don't know if they plan to have him back on a regular basis.

I know that James Keating was supposed to be doing a knife class at the Gahanna Police Dept. on March 16 and 17. Contact Shawn Herman at shawntac1911@aol.com ; or phone (740) 881-6685 to see if there is any room left. Cost was $185.00. I had to skip this one because I'm saving vacation days and my money for Thunder Ranch next fall, and who knows what else? I wish I didn't have to make difficult choices like this!

As for me, I was helping teach basic self-defense at OSU (for the past six years), but our courses are in "transition" now, with no more FIST suit exercises, due to what I call a "pathological administrative subculture." I'm trying to get things straightened out, but who knows? I don't have a Masters or PhD so I guess I don't exist in their friggin politicized world...

Thanks for the info Safety Guy. I will check with Grove City karate to see if this class will be coming back again any time soon. I also might check with Gahanna polica on the keating class. I hope you get to go to Thunder Ranch. I hear the place is awesome. I do a lot of shooting at New Albany Gun Range. Also, just wanted to let you know about an upcoming knife show. I don't know if you attend shows or not, but I went to this one the last time they had it (I think in September), and it was pretty good. It is called the NKCA Cincinnatti show. They hold it at the Roberts Convention Center off of 71 South. This show is March 15 through the 17. Just thought I'd let you know. I always try to attend all the shows that are within driving distance, especially ones close to Columbus. I guess I figure if I support them they will keep coming back. Oh well, thanks again. Keep those Emersons sharp.
